BMW showcased a coupe version of its Z4 roadster at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, revealing the model destined for production in 2006. This "concept" revisits the formula established with the previous-generation car, once more with the promise of a stiffer structure and more sporting manners than the open-top version. Motivation for this hatchback comes from a new magnesium-alloy 3.0-liter inline six that produces 265 horsepower, good for a claimed 5.7-second 0-60-mph sprint. Expect all the features and technology from the Z4 to transfer over to this all-season two-door. What wasn't disclosed in Germany is that an M-tuned coupe and convertible has been engineered to follow the Z4 coupe into production, probably a year later. This example was caught on a more impressive stage, the famed Nurburging, where it was undergoing high-speed testing.

The new M performance models are expected to be motivated by a 3.2L/343-hp version of the famed I-6, rather than the 4.0L/400-hp V-8 destined for the larger M3 coupe. These M editions are distinguished from the standard Z4 by a more dramatic front fascia with large air intakes, aggressive wheel/tire fitment, and four exhaust pipes. The interior will be dressed with the traditional tri-color stitching and trim, with a higher-grade of standard equipment than on the Z4.
