2009 Toyota Matrix

2009 Toyota Matrix Front Exterior

- Designed to be more coupe-like than current Matrix, with a wider stance.
- Standard 1.8-liter VVT-i engine that produces 132 hp and 128 lb-ft, and returns an estimated 26/32 mpg city/highway on the new EPA test (25/31 with the optional four-speed automatic transmission.)
- Optional 2.4-liter producing 158 hp and 162 lb-ft. With its five-speed automatic, it is estimated at 21/29 EPA miles per gallon.
- The Matrix is based on the Corolla; the Pontiac Vibe is its twin
- On sale in February of 2008

Toyota says: "The Matrix concept was based on blending the functionality of an SUV, the style, image, and performance of a sports car with the affordability of a subcompact sedan."

We say: What works in concept doesn't always work in practice -- we doubt the Matrix drives like a sports car. With that said, it provides a more spacious, hatchback-bodied, all-wheel drive (S-Models only) alternative to a sedan when looking for a Corolla-sized Toyota.
