Having denied that the 1-series would be fitted with an in-line six-cylinder engine ever since the funky looking hatch was unveiled, it was little surprise to see BMW pitch up at Geneva with the new 3.0-liter six installed under its hood. This addresses the main criticism of the babiest Bimmer, namely a lack of grunt from its four-cylinder engine lineup. The six-cylinder engine is the same 255-hp unit as in the 330i, giving a top speed of 155 mph and a 0-to-62-mph time of 6.2 seconds. Externally, this one is differentiated from lesser siblings by dual chrome tailpipes, chrome-plated grille slats, and seventeen-inch wheels and tires, while there are sport seats and a leather sport steering wheel inside. Active Steering will be an option. Don't expect to see the hatchback version of this car in the U.S., but it is likely we will see both a coupe and convertible version sometime around 2007.
