2008 Land Rover Freelander

Text Size

The future of Land Rover includes a new Freelander that will be based, like the upcoming Volvo XC50, on Ford's global C1 platform, which underpins the new European Focus. The 2008 model year Freelander will be stiffer, safer, and more powerful than the current model, with an available in-line six-cylinder engine supplied by Volvo. Spy shots also show tougher styling cues that should alter the truck's cute-ute image. The slow-selling two-door SE3 ragtop will not return. Sources say that in 2008 a "baby Freelander" will arrive with available front-wheel drive--previously a Land Rover no-no--and the goal of reducing Land Rover's average fleet fuel consumption. The question remains though-will the smallest Land Rover keep the Freelander name, or will it, like the LR3, hide from its past behind an LR2 badge?
