Once around the block: Lincoln MKZ

There was no chance for instrument testing. There wasn't even the chance to do a standing-start 0 to 60 by watch, but with one lap of Ford Motor's oval test track in Dearborn, it was clear the new 3.5-liter V-6 is going to be a winner for the company. It won't surprise you with dent-the-seatback acceleration, but now, at least, it's acceptable in cars like the midsize Lincoln MKZ-known as Zephyr. Too many Fords have been anchored with the 203-horse, 3.0-liter V-6. With the new 3.5 making an impressive 263 horses and 249 pound-feet, the V-6 is a match for the Japanese competition and for GM's 240-horse, 3.6-liter "high-feature" engine in the Buick LaCrosse. The Linc gets a six-speed automatic, which helps. The 3.5 also bows this fall in the much-needed Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX.

How To Fight Back
By Editors of Motor Trend

Bring back the Boss
Polishes the Mustang legend with 390 horsepower from new naturally aspirated 5.0-liter alloy-block V-8; stripped interior and Shelby GT500 suspension. Ford is still working the details, but it will have a version of those iconic Boss stripes.

Copy Toyota & Honda
Like Accord coupe, Fusion coupe sheetmetal will be close to sedan to keep a lid on costs, and powertrains and suspension will be shared. Lincoln will get a MKZ coupe with new 3.5-liter V-6, but no word yet on whether Mercury will be given a two-door Milan.

Don't rely on Explorer
One size up from the new Edge, Ford's new big crossover uses Ford's D3 architecture wrapped in Fairlane Concept design cues and could get the Yamaha 4.4-liter V-8. Explorer will be repositioned as more off-road-capable SUV.

Make small cars cool
U.S. Focus will converge with the European model, and next-generation version of the C-Max compact minivan will be among the versions offered U.S. buyers. High-style, Mexican-made B-car will take on Yaris and Fit.
