2008 Concept A Production
Just as the Concept 1 became the New Beetle, this year's Concept A from Geneva hints at the small VW SUV, which probably will be offered with the full line of Golf/Rabbit engines as it's based on the same platform. Developed under the names Marrakesh and Bedouin, its name was to be chosen by VW from five finalists in a German online contest. They are (no, we're not making this up) Nanuk, Mamib, Rockton, Samun, and Tiguan.
2008 Polo Sedan
As part of the move to revive its value-brand image, VW will sell a small, cheaper-than-Rabbit four-door sedan in the U.S. As long as VW is reviving cuddly animal names in place of blue-blood sports names, it might as well call it the Fox (a name it uses on a smaller car from Brazil).
2009 Scirocco
A Wolfsburg insider says this car hasn't been approved for U.S. import, yet. However, the company hints that VW's quick and smooth twincharger four, a supercharged and turbocharged 170-horse, 1.4-liter would make its North American debut in a vehicle by late 2008, and the Scirocco, which will be a nonretro 2+2 coupe based on a new, lower-content 2009 Golf/Rabbit platform, is the likely choice. The 1.4 costs VW twice as much as the inline-five, so don't expect it in any entry-level vehicles, and it won't get the same horsepower on the U.S.'s lower-octane fuel.
