The popular Mazda3 is about to go gunning for Golf GTIs with a new high-performance version that promises close to 250 horsepower, a 0-to-60-mph time of about 6.0 seconds, and a top speed of around 150 mph.
With its turbocharged direct-injection version of the 2.3-liter inline-four under the hood, Mazda claims the Mazdaspeed3 is one of the most powerful front-drive hot hatches on the market. It uses a sophisticated torque-control system in first through fourth gears, plus a newly developed limited-slip differential to reduce torque steer and wheelspin. A new, wide-ratio six-speed manual is standard.
The Mazdaspeed3 is based on the five-door hatchback model. Body rigidity has been increased, higher-rate springs and larger-diameter anti-roll bars have been fitted, and the four-wheel disc brakes have been upgraded, with larger-diameter rotors front and rear. Standard equipment includes brake assist and dynamic stability control.
Visually, the Mazdaspeed3 features front fenders pumped 20 mm to clear the 215/45 tires mounted on 18-inch alloy wheels, a reprofiled front bumper, large-diameter exhaust, and a roof-mounted spoiler.
