The 911 connection: Why GM should copy Porsche's model strategy
Base Corvette: Fixed-top coupe (better rigidity with no lift-off panel) and convertible with a naturally aspirated 400-440-horsepower small-block using all the latest technologies, from direct-injection, cylinder deactivation, and variable valve timing to hybrid-assist transmission. Any lift-off top version should use the convertible's structure for assembly simplicity.911 role model: Carrera 2 coupe and cabrio
Z06: Similar to current car in concept, with 500 horses plus naturally aspirated V-8, manual only transmission (preferably DSG), aluminum frame, carbon-fiber fenders. Performance optimized suspension and tires, larger brake package, etc. Offer a stripped-down track-spec version (Z06 LM, as in Le Mans, anyone?) with carbon-fiber hood and roof in addition to fenders, ultra-light forged-alloy wheels, competition-spec tires, carbon-ceramic brake package, and delete option interior hardware to save weight.911 role model: GT3, GT3 RS, GT2
Z07: The ultimate Corvette, designed to be an all-around GT with supercar performance-say 205-210-mph top speed-to enable it to run with the likes of a Ferrari 599GTB. But for way less money, of course. Big grunt via 650-horsepower supercharged V-8 and DSG transmission, with taut handling thanks to Z06 spec suspension components. Interior is fully loaded, with up-spec leather and other trim items standard. 911 role model: Turbo
