2021 Genesis G70 MODEL OVERVIEW

  • Strong twin-turbo V-6 offering
  • Exceptional value
  • Noteworthy safety scores

  • Shared Hyundai/Kia infotainment system
  • 2.0T engine isn't as quick or as efficient as competitors
  • Brand doesn't yet command status in luxury segment

The G70 is the smallest and most affordable offering from Genesis, the luxury arm of Hyundai and Kia. Positioned below the G80 and G90 luxury sedans, the G70 competes with other compact luxury sedans including the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Audi A4. Despite its gas engine, the G70's price range and size make it a competitor to the fully electric Tesla Model 3.

What's New

  • 0T Sport package no longer available
  • 3T Elite package content—adaptive headlights, rain-sensing wipers, parking sensors, a wide sunroof, and wireless charging—is now standard

What We Think

The G70 is one of our favorite sedans. If you had any doubts, here are a couple notes from when it became our  2019 Car of the Year: "It hits all the right notes: Punchy powertrains and an agile chassis that's a ton of fun, sporty exterior styling with strong graphics, and a well-appointed interior. Look out, BMW. It's the real deal."

We also called it a "stunning, value-packed sport sedan that should shake up any shopper's consideration list." That said, in a comparison against the BMW 3 Series and similarly priced Tesla Model 3, the Tesla took the top spot by rewriting the rules of what a compact sport sedan can be. We've also had a couple build quality issues in a one-year G70 test car that didn't exactly back up its excellent first impression.

The G70 remains a compelling package, but we might wait until the 2022 model is available before driving away in a new Genesis. A major midcycle refresh arrives for 2022, and we can't wait to get behind the wheel.

Performance and Fuel Economy

Entry-level G70s come equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-four developing 252 hp and 260 lb-ft. Most models work with an eight-speed automatic, but Genesis also offers an increasingly rare six-speed manual. (The manual is being dropped for 2022.) RWD is standard and automatic-equipped examples can be ordered with AWD. Our testing shows manual-equipped RWD G70s hit 60 in 7.2 seconds and equivalent models with the automatic accomplish the same in 6.2 seconds. Fuel economy is rated at 18-22/27-30 mpg city/highway depending on transmission and drive type.

The G70 can also be had with a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6. That engine cranks out 365 hp and 376 lb-ft and, with help from an eight-speed auto, transmits power for RWD or AWD. The same 0-60 sprint takes the V-6 model just 4.5 seconds with RWD or 4.8 with AWD. Fuel economy drawbacks are slight; the G70 3.3T returns 17/25-26 mpg.

2022 Genesis G70: What's Coming for Next Year

Aside from the 2022 G70's dramatic new front and rear ends, interior upgrades are on the way, too. Genesis is replacing the current G70's 8.0-inch infotainment display for a 10.3-inch unit with capability for over-the-air updates, Tesla style. New powertrains may be on the way as well; the 2.0T may be replaced with a 2.5-liter turbo-four and the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 swapped for the 3.5-liter unit from the GV80.

The G70 is among the safest cars on sale. With exceptional performance across the board in IIHS safety testing, the sedan earns the highest possible designation of 2020 Top Safety Pick+. Genesis also includes a slew of driver-assist active safety features as standard on all models. Adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a driver attention warning are included on every G70.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

The G70's trunk measures 10.5 cubic feet, which is on the tighter side compared to the Audi A4 at 12.0 cubes or the Tesla Model 3's 15.0-cu. ft hold. Legroom is rated at 42.6 inches up front and 34.8 inches in the back seat, which is about average for the segment.

Every G70 features an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment setup that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Six-speaker audio is standard, and a 15-speaker Lexicon premium system is available. Other options include integrated navigation, a head-up display, a 360-degree camera system, and a wireless charging pad.
