When the Yukon is far too big or expensive but the Terrain's bold design isn't your style, the Acadia might be a better fit. The Acadia slots above the Terrain and below the Yukon in GMC's SUV lineup. In 2017, the second generation of the midsize crossover was introduced and in 2020 it received a significant redesign. The Acadia shares a platform with the Cadillac XT5 and can be configured with a turbo-four or V-6 engine, FWD or AWD, and six- or seven-passenger seating.
This year's Acadia offers fewer trim levels (nice knowing you, FWD-only Acadia SL!) but more active safety features and exterior design choices. While it shouldn't be confused for a serious off-roader, the Acadia is well powered, especially with the available V-6 in the engine compartment. The smaller second-generation Acadia also handles better on paved roads than the first-generation model and provides more grip. The Acadia's exterior looks the part of an intrepid GMC, and its charming interior is undercut only by some of the cheap materials used throughout the cabin.
The base-model Acadia SLE receives a 228-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four or an available 310-hp 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V-6. Every Acadia is equipped with a nine-speed automatic transmission and FWD or available AWD.
The Acadia in FWD form is rated at 22/29 mpg city/highway with its turbo-four and 19/27 mpg with its V-6. In comparison, the 2021 Kia Sorento FWD model has a more powerful turbo-four and gets identical fuel economy, 22/29. For a V-6 comparison, we looked at the 2021 Toyota Highlander and its slightly smaller engine. The Highlander 3.5-liter V-6 FWD has a slight edge, 20/28 mpg city/highway or 21/29 mpg when the engine is equipped with start-stop technology.
With AWD, the 2022 Acadia sees 22/27 mpg city/highway with the turbo-four and 19/26 with the V-6. The 2021 Sorento turbo-four with AWD gets 21/28 mpg and the 2021 Highlander V-6 AWD gets a slightly better 20/27 mpg.
In NHTSA testing, both 2022 Acadia FWD and AWD received five-star overall safety ratings, the administration's highest grade. In testing of a 2021 Acadia, the IIHS said the GMC earned primarily Good scores, getting an Acceptable grade for child seat anchors being too deep in second-row seats and confusing hardware in the third row.
The GMC Pro Safety Plus package became standard across the Acadia lineup for the 2022 model year. The bundle includes automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic monitoring, and parking sensors. Adaptive cruise control is available on the Acadia Denali.
The Acadia has advantages in cargo space behind the first and third rows when compared to the Kia Sorento. The Acadia also has a marginal edge in second-row legroom, which is appreciated in a segment where the second and third rows aren't always spacious.
Cargo space (behind first/second/third rows):
2022 Acadia: 79/41.7/12.8 cubic feet
2021 Sorento: 75.5/45.0/12.6 cubic feet
Legroom (first/second/third rows):
2022 Acadia: 41/39.7/29.7 inches
2021 Sorento: 41.4/41.7/29.6 inches
Every Acadia receives LED headlights, keyless entry and start, and a high-definition rearview camera. Interior niceties include a pushbutton start, 4.2-inch driver information screen in the gauge cluster, active noise cancellation, and three-zone climate control with controls for the second row. The infotainment system includes a six-speaker sound system and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Features available through package or at higher trim level include a hands-free power liftgate, power-folding side mirrors, and remote start. Available driver conveniences include a power-adjustable steering column, heated steering wheel, and head-up display. Other options include heated and ventilated eight-way power-adjustable front seats, heated outboard rear seats, an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, an 8.0-inch driver information screen, and Bose premium eight-speaker sound system.
The Denali and AT4 are a pair of specialized Acadia trim levels aimed at two distinct users. The discerning SUV shopper looking for a premium touch should consider the Acadia Denali. It comes standard with LED head- and taillights, chrome exterior accents, leather-trimmed heated and ventilated first-row seats and heated second-row seats, and a leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel. A head-up display is also standard on the Acadia Denali, and available features consist of an adaptive suspension and a 360-degree view camera system. The Denali is only available with the V-6 and comes standard FWD or with available AWD.
Although the Acadia is admittedly not a proper off-roader, in AT4 trim it embraces that life. Go-anywhere inspired features include a torque-vectoring AWD system, hill-scaling technologies, and trim-specific 17-inch black wheels with all-terrain tires. The Acadia AT4 also comes standard with a hands-free power liftgate and, like the Denali, is only available with the V-6 engine.
