2022 GMC Canyon MODEL OVERVIEW

The GMC Canyon is the automaker's midsize pickup, the little sibling to the full-size Sierra. GMC reintroduced it for the 2015 model year at the same time Chevrolet relaunched its mechanical twin, the Colorado. Last year, GMC added an off-road-capable AT4 variant, although it's not as extreme as the Colorado ZR2. The Canyon competes with other midsize pickups including the aforementioned Colorado, the Toyota Tacoma, and the Nissan Frontier.

What We Think

GMC's smaller alternative to the full-size Sierra pickup might actually be a better truck. We've been impressed with the torque-rich diesel variant that not only provides excellent fuel economy but is also relatively quiet. The Canyon is also the only midsize pickup to offer a diesel option, other than its mechanical twin the Chevrolet Colorado.

The V-6 is a sweet powerplant, too. It sounds surprisingly sweet and provides the Canyon with impressive acceleration for a pickup. With either engine, the Canyon barely notices weight in the bed and when we towed a 7,600-pound trailer with the Duramax, it didn't break a sweat. The Canyon is also notable for its comfortable ride and nimble handling, although the eight-speed auto paired with the V-6 can be hesitant to downshift.

Driving the new AT4 variant, we were pleased with its behavior on the road but disappointed with the cabin. It doesn't feel bad per se, but the truck just doesn't stand out in the segment and rear seat space is tighter than we'd like. The Canyon as a package succeeds in providing a capable truck that's comfortable and usable when you're not towing or hauling, we just wish the interior was more impressive.

Performance and Efficiency

The Canyon is available with three engine options: two gas powerplants and a turbodiesel four-cylinder.

Transmission: Eight-speed automatic
Horsepower/Torque: 308 hp/275 lb-ft

Safety Ratings and Features

The Canyon gets decent crash test scores from the IIHS, with the highest possible Good rating on five of six crashworthiness evaluations and a Marginal rating for the small overlap front: passenger-side test. The headlights get the lowest possible rating of Poor. In NHTSA safety testing, the Canyon gets an unimpressive four-star overall safety rating and a three-star rollover rating with a 21.4-percent rollover risk.

Active safety options are limited. Forward collision alert and lane departure warning are available on all trims and standard on the Canyon Denali.

Cargo Space, Interior Room, and Configurations

Cargo space and interior dimensions are dependent on what cab and bed combination you choose. Buyers who want a crew cab pickup can choose between a 61.7-inch short box and a 74.0-inch long box. Extended-cab examples are only available with the long box.

Cargo space:

2022 GMC Canyon (Short/Long Box): 41.3/49.9 cubic feet
2022 Ford Ranger (Short/Long Box): 43.3/51/8 cubic feet

Legroom (first/second row):

2022 GMC Canyon (Extended Cab): 5.0/28.6 inches
2022 GMC Canyon (Crew Cab): 45.0/35.8 inches
2022 Ford Ranger (SuperCab): 43.1/30.4 inches
2022 Ford Ranger (SuperCrew): 43.1/34.5 inches

Technology

Every Canyon includes a touchscreen infotainment setup with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Most trims feature a 7.0-inch display while an 8.0-inch system is standard on the Denali and available on the Canyon AT4. Six speaker audio is standard but a seven-speaker Bose system is optional on all trims and standard on the Canyon Denali.

Recommended Trim

If we were buying a Canyon, we'd go for the top-spec Denali. Why? It's the only proper luxury truck in the segment, with higher-quality leather upholstery, open-pore wood trim, and chrome accents. The Denali trim is also the only proper differentiator between the Canyon and its Chevrolet Colorado equivalent, other than the Colorado's ultra-capable ZR2 variant.
