The 1996 GMC K1500 is a durable and reliable pickup truck built in the GMC tradition. With significant upgrades for this year's model, it continues to provide four-wheel-drive power but also offers additional comforts and extremely impressive safety ratings. It's built to keep going and offers decent gas mileage for a four-by-four. Overall, this is a solid American-made truck that will get the job done.

What's New

The 1996 GMC K1500 gets significant upgrades including a new line of more powerful engines called the Vortec. Extended cab models now offer a third access door. The illuminated entry feature now makes it easier to get settled into the cab at night, and the updated exhaust system reduces emissions with new sensors that help monitor those emissions.


The 1996 GMC K1500 comes in 15 standard color options. Standard features include tinted glass and 15-inch wheels, while options include camper and towing package, alloy wheels, and chrome wheels. Also optional is a liner to protect the bed, otherwise, exterior design remains typical of GMC trucks.


The 1996 GMC K1500 Special and SL comes standard with a bench seat, which is vinyl. The seats come standard in cloth upholstery for the SLE and SLT. All models come with lighted entry, a tilt steering wheel, and an AM/FM stereo. The SLE and SLT come standard with leather steering wheel trim, and air-conditioning, and power windows and locks. Options include AM/FM/Cassette/CD stereo system, manual sliding rear window, and an auto-dim rearview mirror.

Performance & Handling

The 1996 GMC K1500 are four-wheel drive, and offers a new series of engines, called Vortec, which is introduced this year and provides more power and torque than ever before. It includes a 4.3-liter that puts out 200 hp at 4400 rpm, a five-liter V-8 that offers 220 hp at 4600 rpm, and a 5.7-liter V-8 with an impressive 250 hp at 4600 rpm.


The 1996 GMC K1500 comes standard with a four-wheel anti-lock brake system, daytime running lights, and driver front airbags. It receives five out of five stars for overall driver and passenger safety in the event of a frontal collision during crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
