2000 GMC Sierra Review

Lots of power.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2000 GMC Sierra was completely redesigned in 1999. This Silverado-based pickup truck now boasts a powerful drive train, lots of standard features, and a versatile body style. However, its build quality is poor and it uses low-quality materials throughout, so be wary.

What's New

The 2000 GMC Sierra received a redesign in 1999. Extended cab models now get four doors, giving easy access to the rear bench. The 4.3- and 5.3-liter engines also receive more power and increased trailer ratings. Automatic door locks are now programmable. New styling items, such as wheel-lip flares, a soft cover for the bed, and other items, are now available as options.

Exterior

The 2000 GMC Sierra is built on the same model as the Silverado. The main difference between the two is the front of the vehicle; the Sierra has a larger, more pronounced grille and the GMC badge on the nose. GMC Sierras come with either a 6.5-foot or eight-foot cargo bed. The rear doors of the extended cab models are the largest of any pickup truck on the market.

Interior

The 2000 GMC Sierra has more room than your typical Dodge, Ford, or Toyota. It also has the option of regular cab and extended cab, or Club Cab models. Extended cab models come with a three-passenger back bench seat. This seat is at an 18-degree angle, making it more comfortable than a typical back seat bench. The only thing keeping it from being top notch is the use of some cheap plastic materials inside. Standard features include a hinged third door on extended cab models, lighted entry system, tachometer, cloth seating, front split bench seat, rear bench, power steering, tilt steering wheel, and an AM/FM stereo.

Performance & Handling

The 2000 GMC Sierra comes equipped with one of four different engines, depending on the size and build. Regular cab 1500 models come equipped with a 200-horsepower, V-6 engine. The 1500 models also have two optional V-8 engines as well. The 4.8-liter engine creates 270 horsepower, while the 5.3-liter engine creates 285 horsepower. The 2500 modes come equipped with the 5.3-liter engine as standard, while an optional 6.0-liter, V-8 engine that produces 300 horsepower is also available. All models are available with two- or four-wheel drive. It comes with an InstaTrac system that allows drivers to shift between two-wheel and four-wheel drive on the fly. The most impressive feature is the choice of powerful V-8 engines. The drivetrain is smooth, and in combination with the great suspension and quality architecture, drivers can go pretty much anywhere.

Safety

The 2000 GMC Sierra comes equipped with four-wheel anti-lock brakes, daytime running lights, and driver and passenger front airbags. The NHTSA gave it four out of five stars for passenger safety, and three out of five stars for driver safety. The IIHS gave a score of ""marginal,"" its second worst, for front offset crash tests.
