2011 GMC Sierra Review

Great big comfortable truck loaded for performance

Reviewed by Automotive on

In a Nutshell
The 2011 GMC Sierra is a top-of-the-line full-size truck with a wide array of configurations, from basic work trucks trims, to the sophisticated Denali trim, with many trims in between. The GMC Sierra comes with several different engines including the 6.2 liter V-8 engine or the 4.3 liter V-6 engine, joined to either a four-speed or a six-speed auto transmission.

Most trims offer four-wheel drive, but on Denali you get all-wheel drive. You can opt for different cabin sizes and bed lengths, and even choose one of five suspensions. If you want good fuel economy, opt for the GMC Sierra XFE hosting a crew cab and delivering 22 mpg on the highway. The Hybrid Sierra comes with a two-mode system that offers the same fuel efficiency as the XFE and can tow 6200 pounds. The Sierra comes with top-notch safety equipment and is one of the safest trucks on the road.

New for 2011

The 2011 GMC Sierra is essentially a carryover with a few new additions, including a new Gray Green Metallic exterior color, GM's latest OnStar 9.0, and modifications made to help reduce wind noise in the Sierra's cabin. Overall, the Sierra's wide range of power trains, cabs, and suspensions make it a significant contender in its segment.

All trims with the exception of the work truck come with a distinctive chrome hood molding and a variety of wheel options. A number of distinctive features are added at the Denali trim level.

From the Inside

GMC often touts Sierra's "pure pickup" interior features, such as larger controls and handles that operate more easily with gloves. The base trim level offers few standard features, but if you go to the SLT or Denali trims, a wealth of entertainment and connectivity features are optional.

Driving Performance

With a diverse mix of power trains available, ranging from a 4.3-liter V-6 engine rated at 195 horsepower up to a 6.2-liter V-8 (standard on the Denali) that churns out 403 horsepower, mated to either a four-speed or six-speed automatic transmission. The GMC Sierra can tow as much as 10,700 pounds in its most powerful configuration. While not the nimblest truck when it comes to turning, the Sierra's overall ride is smooth and comfortable for a large truck. The Sierra features five suspension configurations ranging from off-road to on-road packages.

Safety Equipment

The standard safety features on the 2011 GMC Sierra include StabiliTrak stability control system with rollover mitigation technology, seat-mounted side air bags, and head curtain side air bags. Safety belt pre-tensioners designed to activate in rear end crash situations are optional.
