Combine the fact that few in this country are taught how to really drive to begin with, and then give them a phone. These numbers don't surprise me. But, it's not the texting that kills people. It's the complacency behind the wheel. If you aren't thinking every minute you drive that you could kill or be killed with one mistake, then you are a terrible driver!

I will text while I drive. I'm still less likely to cause an accident or be in one at all than 99% of the other people on the road with me. One letter at a time - NEVER go for that second letter or the send button. Only 1/2 second max eyes off the road. Never when traffic in front of you could stop faster than you can. Never when people are merging or multiple things are going on. Never when there are traffic lights you are approaching. etc. etc.

The issue is people who drive on auto pilot. Not texting. You could just as easily be distracted by your kids in the back. Or a conversation you're having with your mother in law in the passenger seat.

@maplemale I am 28 with 0 accidents and not even a speeding ticket even taking your eyes off the road for one letter at a time is still enough time to cause a wreck. Trust me I have seen it many times working for the fire dept. everyone just needs to put the dam phone done and drive. Better yet if you feel you need to text and drive you need to be arrested  or be put in a mental hospital, tickets wont work and getting in accidents don't work. Just don't do it if you value others and your life.

@maplemale  You are endangering other drivers and pedestrians by texting and driving. We don't care how good a driver you think you are. Texting while driving is a distraction. All distractions while driving are bad.  Texting is one of those distractions that is really bad.

You never know what a poster's issues may be, so please lighten up on the Posting Police act. Less than perfect posts can be caused by a number of issues: a lack of digital (finger) dexterity, poor eyesight, medical reasons -- the list is endless.

... LOL! I just realized that we've "met" before, and others and I have previously responded to your inane, self-important postings. I'm sorry your mother didn't give you enough attention when you were a child and the rest of us are now having to suffer for it; carry on.

@rescuematt @maplemale I respect the fact that you have seen things which lead you to your opinion. I also know many firefighters who disagree with you completely.

How many accidents have you been on where the person simply dozed off? What about drunk driving? What about "they just weren't paying attention"? Just "didn't see the light was red", didn't see that old lady crossing the street or a hundred other reasons?

Here are some facts:

 - The fines / laws regarding texting do nothing / little to prevent it from happening
 - There are 1000 other types of "distracted" driving
 - You are only here and angry because, texting and driving is still going on, which proves the first point

So, instead of condoning more stupid laws about what you can and can't do while driving which are mostly un-enforceable, and I could argue make the roads less safe, why don't slow down, take a breather and think for a minute about the root cause of the issue - which is not the device in the person's hand, but their attitude about driving and lack of skill.

PS: I don't mean to disrespect what you do. But, I still have a right to disagree with you. And since you don't know me and have likely never seen me drive. Let's lay off the putting me in jail or mental hospitals for now. Insulting me like that does nothing to support your opinion.

@Michael Rogers @maplemale  Who do you think you are speaking for when you say "we don't care" since you are the only one to respond to my comment? Furthermore, you have given no valid argument whatsoever against any of the points I made. Unless you can come up with an intelligent argument other than just repeating something you heard in a pre-show theater advertisement, go home. You are no good at arguing --- probably no good at driving either. I venture to bet in my 30 years of driving I've been in fewer accidents than you have.

@maplemale @rescuematt I was not trying to insult you. I was saying that for all the drivers that if you pick it up then it could land you there. I agree with you that there is a 1000 other types people get into wrecks but when i am driving it seems that most people i see have a cell in hand. And I know it would be a stupid law that we dont need. And i also agree with you on the attitude and lack of skill. Sorry if i offended you. Have a great day.

@maplemale @Michael Rogers Michael, considering what maplemale is posting and how he is responding, I believe he's either a troll or a nineteen year-old male; neither of which is worth our time. Considering that HE can safely text and drive -- by typing one letter at a time -- we probably won't have to deal with him much longer anyway.

Maplemale -- include me in the "we don't care" crowd as well.

@rescuematt@maplemale  That's ok... I'm not offended. And I get where you are coming from.

In the same token I'd be an idiot to say there isn't a correlation between cell phone use and wrecks. I think everyone gets "passionate" about driving debates. It's likely most that do get passionate are not the people with the phone up their arse swerving into your lane. :)

@Oldilocks BC "crowd" - hm...

Believe what you want. Only reason you are responding at all is because of the teenager on the way into work this morning who drove like they had a phone up their @ss. I'm here disagreeing with your sweeping non-solution and so I’m the outlet of your anger and frustration.

Like most of our population, you aren't intelligent enough to determine cause vs. symptom. My only point is that the cause of bad driving habits is not texting. It is simply not taking driving seriously enough and not being able to pick your nose and drive at the same time. Like most people today, you are putting everyone in a box of can/can't do and applying it to the populous at a macro level with micro rules which are 99% ineffective. More laws that no one respects / cares about, and instead of providing a safer situation, provide only another revenue source for your county. Ya, I get pissed at the teenage girl swerving into my lane while she looks at her phone as well. The odd thing about the situation is you are blaming the phone and the activity instead of the person’s attitude about driving which is the real issue.

Grow up. Quit getting defensive. PS: I’m 34 and still… not causing accidents.
