1999 Honda Accord Review

America’s favorite time and time again.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The Honda Accord is consistently the best-selling car in America and has the highest resale value in its class. Loyal customers love this car’s roomy interior, very reliable performance, great fuel economy, and long-lasting quality. All nine models of the 1999 Honda Accord have these beloved features and more. All models are one of two model types and have one of two configurations. The five sedan models have a four-door configuration and the four coupe models have a two-door configuration.

Five models are powered by a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. The other four models have a three-liter V-6 engine. When powered by a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, the five-speed manual transmission is standard and four-speed automatic transmission is available as an option. Models with the 3.0-liter V-6 engine are only available with the four-speed automatic transmission. The Honda Accord DX Sedan has a horsepower of 135 and 145 lb-ft of torque. All other models with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine come with a horsepower of 150 and 152 lb-ft of torque standard, with an optional horsepower of 148 and 148 lb-ft of torque. The models with a 3.0-liter V-6 engine have a horsepower of 200 and 195 lb-ft of torque. All models have front-wheel drive.

The Range

Body styles: four-door sedan, two-door coupe
Engines: 2.3-liter four-cylinder, 3.0-liter V-6
Transmissions: five-speed manual with overdrive, four-speed automatic with overdrive
Models: Honda Accord sedan models: DX, LX, LX V-6, EX, EX V-6; Honda Accord coupe models: LX, LX V-6, EX, EX V-6

What's New

The most significant change for the 1999 model year is the addition of a 3.0-liter V-6 engine to LX and EX models in both the sedan and coupe model types. This is the first ever V-6 engine in Honda's entire lineup. The 2.3-liter four-cylinder engines receive minor adjustments, as does the 2.3-liter four-cylinder chassis. LX and EX models now feature fold away side mirrors. There are slight changes to the interior. A recent overhaul assures most changes are minimal, though.

Exterior

The recent overhaul to the Honda Accord changed many things on the exterior and on the interior. The result is that the 1999 Honda Accord sees few updates. Most of the updates it does get have to do with the chassis or internal structure of the car. Still, the exterior of all LX and EX models now feature folding side mirrors. The exterior appearance is pretty much as one would expect for a small car. All models sit atop a 106.9-inch wheelbase.

The exterior difference between the two model types is the number of doors. The Sedans have four doors and the Coupes have two. Although most exterior attributes remain the same as the models get nicer, a few things do get more luxurious. For example, the basic DX model only has four options for exterior paint. Even though the options vary, LX and EX models have six exterior color choices. The V-6 versions of the LX and EX take a step backwards and only have five choices. The wheels on the DX model measure 14-inches and are made of steel. With the step up to the LX and EX models, wheels become alloy and get an inch wider. The V-6 models feature 15-inch (LX V-6) or 16-inch (EX V-6) wheels made of steel (LX V-6) or alloy (EX V-6).

Interior

Interior updates for 1999 include new fabric for the sedan models and a freshened interior for all models. All models continue a tradition by offering a roomy interior. The interior of this vehicle is roomier than all other competitors in its class. All models seat five passengers. All models also feature tons of storage space. But in order to keep the price down, interior features have been kept minimal. For example, the stereo in the basic DX model only features AM/FM radio and a cassette player.

Performance & Handling

All models have the option of four-speed automatic transmission, even though it is only standard on the V-6 models. But as long as one opts for automatic transmission, performance and braking are decent. Steering and handling are effortless. The one place that this vehicle has trouble performing is on a super curvy road. All models are very fast, but have issues with sharp turns.

Safety

The EX model comes equipped with the most safety features. It has a security system, ignition cut off, two frontal airbags, a panic alarm, and anti-lock brakes standard. However, almost all of these features are either standard or optional on the other models. The only exception is that the anti-lock brakes are not available on the basic DX model.
