2023 Honda HR-V MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Honda Sensing safety tech likely standard
  • Probably more powerful than before

Cons

  • Won't have CR-V ride height
  • Don't expect an upscale interior

The CR-V's smaller sibling, the HR-V, is finally due for a full redesign. As Honda's entrant in the subcompact crossover segment, the updated 2023 HR-V should have features to better compete against more than a dozen challengers. Here's what we think you can expect from the new Honda HR-V, likely arriving for the 2023 model year.

What's New on the 2023 Honda HR-V?

Much like the 2021 Ridgeline truck's recent revamp, the redone 2023 Honda HR-V could look tougher. Increased ride height and a more upright greenhouse could help accomplish that.

Besides a full interior restyle, the HR-V will almost certainly feature improved technology. A larger infotainment display will be available, running an improved infotainment system compared from the somewhat clunky system used now. A digital gauge cluster display could also be available, along with additional USB charge ports and a wireless charging pad.

Clever interior packaging is an HR-V hallmark; it's bigger inside than its small outside proportions suggest. Honda will probably work to maintain or improve that packaging advantage to give the 2023 HR-V appeal against its little-yet-practical competitors. Exterior measurements may increase slightly, but not so much that it'll overlap with its CR-V big sibling.

What Engine Will the 2023 Honda HR-V Have?

We expect the 2023 HR-V to offer a four-cylinder engine, potentially one borrowed from the Civic or Accord. One possibility is a 2.0-liter unit producing around 158 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque. Another is a turbocharged 1.5-liter mill that would make approximately 174 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. Whatever the case, FWD will be standard, and AWD again optional (the Kia Soul, Nissan Kicks, and others don't offer AWD). A CVT automatic will likely be the only choice; Honda is trimming down its manual transmission offerings like the six-speed HR-V we kept in our long-term test fleet.

The next-gen HR-V may also offer a hybrid powertrain. Given that Honda has put an electrically assisted engine in its popular CR-V crossover, we think it makes sense for a fuel-saving powertrain to eventually make its way into the HR-V. The HR-V hybrid may not debut alongside the standard car, but should be revealed a few years into the model run.

2023 Honda HR-V Features

The Honda Sensing suite is standard on every vehicle Honda sells, most likely to include the 2023 HR-V. That means it'll be equipped with driver-assist and active-safety features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring.

Hopefully the ultra-useful Magic Seat setup in the outgoing HR-V will make a return. In our experience, these multi-folding second-row seats live up to their name in making a small vehicle like the HR-V more capable of carrying large items.

Technology and improvements could be made as well. A larger infotainment touchscreen, digital gauge cluster display, and more USB ports could be among the options. Convenience features like a power-operated tailgate or phone-as-a-key functionality may also be added to the mix.
