2021 Honda Odyssey MODEL OVERVIEW

  • Smooth 10-speed automatic
  • Thoughtful feature content
  • Revised styling

  • Non-stowable second row
  • No hybrid or AWD option

Honda introduced its fifth-generation Odyssey minivan for 2018, and the family-friendly hauler sees a light mid-cycle update for 2021. The Odyssey competes with all the minivans left on the market, including the Toyota Sienna, Kia Sedona, Chrysler Pacifica, and Chrysler Voyager.

What's New

  • LED headlights and updated exterior styling
  • Honda Sensing active safety suite is now standard

What We Think

We're big fans of the Odyssey, even if it's not the best car in its class. Honda's minivan includes an excellent powertrain, and the available slick-shifting 10-speed is now standard across the range. Updated styling for 2021 also replaces some of the pre-refresh car's awkward sheetmetal.

Feature content (including standard-for-2021 Honda Sensing) is impressive on all models, and clever innovations like the integrated vacuum, Cabin Watch camera system, and Cabin Talk intercom make the spacious Odyssey feel purpose-built for family duty. That said, we wish the Odyssey employed a seat storage solution like the Chrysler Pacifica's Stow 'n Go setup instead of requiring owners to manually remove the bulky second-row seat when in need of cargo space.

We would also love to see a powertrain update to compete with AWD and hybrid offerings on the Chrysler Pacifica and Toyota Sienna. The Odyssey as it sits is a sensible, practical, safe vehicle in which to shuttle your family around, it's just not the best available option.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The 2021 Odyssey carries over an updated version of the same 3.5-liter V-6 that's been powering Odysseys since 1999. In this application, it generates 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque, all of which is routed through a 10-speed automatic to drive the front wheels.

Our testing has seen the Odyssey scoot to 60 in 6.7 seconds, which places it among the quicker vehicles in the segment. Although it has not been evaluated by the EPA for 2021 as of this writing, the 2020 Odyssey is rated at 19/28 mpg city/highway.

The Odyssey is rated as a very safe vehicle. In safety testing conducted by the IIHS on the 2020 model, it starts with a flawless performance in all six crashworthiness tests. The 2020 Odyssey also earns the best possible Superior rating for its now-standard front crash prevention system and the highest available score for child seat anchor ease of use.

All Odysseys, now including the base-model LX, are equipped with the Honda Sensing collection of active safety features as standard. Honda Sensing includes lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

Honda's minivan has room for seven or eight passengers across three rows of seating. Legroom is impressive, with 40.9 inches in the first and second rows and 38.1 inches in the way-back. Cargo capacity is excellent for the segment. Volume measures 32.8 cubic feet behind the third row, 89.2 behind the second, and 144.9 cubic feet behind the first row with all the rear seats folded down.

Although LX models make do with a 5.0-inch infotainment display, EX trims and above include an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and satellite radio support. Top-spec models offer a 10.2-inch rear entertainment system as well. Most Odysseys utilize a seven-speaker audio system with a subwoofer, but the high-end Odyssey Elite includes an 11-speaker premium setup.

It Has a Built-In Vacuum?

We can't think of a more useful feature in a minivan than an integrated vacuum. The Odyssey Touring and Odyssey Elite include the HondaVac vacuum installed in the cargo area to suck up all the pet hair, dropped snacks, and scraps of trash accumulating in your family workhorse.
