2022 Honda Passport MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Lots of space for adventure gear
  • Standard driver assist tech
  • Strong powertrain

Cons

  • No off-road upgrades on TrailSport
  • Likely reduction in fuel economy on TrailSport
  • FWD standard on TrailSport?

Honda is developing a new package for off-road-enthused drivers: TrailSport. The Passport will be the first Honda to receive TrailSport treatment, bringing rugged details to this midsize SUV. The covers are set to come off later in 2021.

What Is Honda TrailSport?

Off-road-oriented SUVs are all the rage these days. Toyota TRD models are as popular as ever, Jeep has Trailhawk, and Subaru is building out its Wilderness lineup. Even Volkswagen is getting with the trend. Now Honda will enter the ring with TrailSport. However, unlike some of those other vehicles, TrailSport will focus on aesthetic changes rather than actual off-road hardware. Besides prominent TrailSport badging, distinguishing details should include tough-looking styling, protective body cladding, contrast seat stitching, and all-weather floor mats. Hopefully, future TrailSport models will be more serious about increasing all-terrain capability.

Which Honda SUVs Will Receive the TrailSport Treatment?

Teasers shared by Honda seem to make clear that its Passport midsize SUV will be the first model to wear TrailSport styling. We can't see much of the vehicle, but it looks happy cruising down a dirt road. It's a good starting point, as the Passport is already decently capable off pavement. We think it's only a matter of time before other Honda models, like the Pilot, Ridgeline, and perhaps eventually CR-V and HR-V, are offered with TrailSport styling.

Honda Passport TrailSport Features and Tech

The powertrain, features, and tech already found in the Passport should make their way to the TrailSport trim as well. That means a strong 3.5-liter V-6, hopefully with standard AWD. It's likely to get the premium 8.0-inch infotainment screen. The Honda Sensing suite of driver assist and active safety features is almost guaranteed. Huge cargo capacity and smart interior packaging are some of our favorite aspects of the Passport, and we don't expect these to change on the TrailSport variant.
