HUMMER H3T

General Motors introduced the Hummer H3T for the 2009 model year. The midsize pickup truck has the grizzly Hummer name behind it, yet it fits the model of a non-SUV, smaller, more efficient midsize truck. The Hummer H3T lasted for two model years, at which time General Motors discontinued manufacturing of its entire lineup.

Hummer H3T Origins

General Motors created the Hummer H3 as a smaller, sportier version of its bulky H1 and H2 models. The H3T persona plays on the economical nature of the H3 and unites it with the rugged character of a pickup truck. The midsize truck exemplifies the burly Hummer image, yet appeals to a broader market and to non-SUV car buyers.

Motor Trend magazine reports, "'The H3T concept expresses a vision of the potential of future Hummer vehicles, targeted at enthusiasts who desire the Hummer image and capability, but in a smaller, non-SUV configuration,' says Clay Dean, design director for small trucks and Hummer. 'It also provides a visual clue to the evolution of Hummer's design.'"

The H3 and H3T look similar to the H2 but lack the fuel consumption of the H2. The H3T is reasonably sized, efficient, and less intimidating than its predecessors.

General Motors collaborated with Nike on several key aspects of the H3T design. The two produced the concept of the ACG TA tire, which contains multiple durometers of rubber, evident in the varying colors. The tires, built by Goodrich, model the design of Nike's ACG hiking shoes.

General Motors utilizes Nike's lightweight Sphere material for its seats and Nike Epic backpacks in the interior of the vehicle. Nike uses the Sphere material in specialized clothing to cool or warm the body automatically. GM feels the collaboration with Nike enhances the H3T project.

By the spring of 2010, Hummer dealerships began to close, and inventory diminished. In May 2010, GM manufactured its final Hummer vehicle.

About the Hummer H3T

General Motors built the Hummer H3T with innovative features. The vehicle's pickup box can be accessed from its side doors and drop-down assist steps that also function as additional storage. The H3T is extremely versatile with its unique tailgate, folding canvas sunroof, and drop-down rear window, which offers drivers an "outdoor air" experience.

The Hummer H3T includes all the features for which the brand is known, such as the ability to navigate all types of terrain, 34-inch tires, heavy off-road performance, wide stance, a low roofline, and 11.5 inches of ground clearance. The model combines the cab and bed into one structure, a detail passed down from Hummer's H1 truck.

GM built the H3T as a fuel-efficient version of its gas-guzzling predecessors even though the fuel economy still turns away electric-driving enthusiasts. It houses a 239 horsepower, five-cylinder engine that produces 241 lb-ft of torque. Hummer aficionados who value the brawn of a larger engine can opt for the Alpha trim level, which includes a V-8 engine capable of pumping out 300 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque.

Hummer H3T Features

The 2010 Hummer H3T boasts similarities to the previous model year, but it improves fuel efficiency with the addition of the flex-fuel capability for the 5.3-liter V-8 engine. The base model standard 3.7-liter, five-cylinder engine is powerful, yet it lacks the stamina needed to haul the 5,000-pound, off-road midsize truck.

The 2010 H3T, though identical in options to the 2009 H3T, offers five trim levels: base, Adventure, Alpha, Luxury, and Alpha with leather. All H3T models come with a five-speed manual transmission with full-time four-wheel drive. Purchasers can add a four-speed automatic transmission as an option.

Hummer H3T Evolution

The Hummer H3T made its entrance into the auto market for the 2009 model year. Hummer expanded its H3 line with the H3T model, a midsize crew-cab pickup truck version of the H3. General Motors replaced the cargo area of the H3 for an open pickup bed and lengthened the wheelbase.

The truck, though smaller than its cousin, the H2, still weighs 5,000 pounds. The 2009 H3T houses a 239 horsepower, 3.7-liter, five-cylinder engine, which leaves car buyers less than enthusiastic. To satisfy engine lovers everywhere, General Motors introduced the Alpha trim level, which sports a 300 horsepower V-8 engine.

The base model 2009 Hummer H3T includes 16-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth, keyless entry, OnStar, a six-speaker CD stereo, and power controls. Buyers can add options to the base model with two packages: the Adventure Package and the Luxury Package.

The Adventure Package appeals to the off-road driver and comes with off-road suspension, 33-inch tires, and options that allow for better hill climbing. The Luxury Package appeals to the Hummer lover who enjoys the bells and whistles of luxury automobiles. It features leather upholstery, heated seats, and jumbo floor mats.

The H3T Alpha model offers a Leather Package as well, and it includes additional features such as chrome wheels and exterior trim. Car buyers can also purchase options such as a power sunroof, an in-dash six-CD changer, and a navigation system.

Standard safety features include stability control, OnStar, full-length side curtain airbags, traction control, and anti-lock disc brakes.
