Overview

The 1997 Hyundai Accent comes in two different body styles: sedan and hatchback. Hyundai offers only one trim level for the sedan type, but the hatchback comes in three. 1997 marks the first year for the sedan body type. The Accent comes with one engine choice and two transmission choices.

What's New

Trim levels change for 1997, adding the GS hatchback and GL sedan.

Exterior

Thirteen-inch wheels come standard on all 1997 Hyundai Accents except for the GT hatchback, which comes with 14-inch wheels. The L hatchback and GT hatchback come with tinted glass standard, while this remains optional on the GL sedan and GS hatchback. Remote trunk release comes standard on all but the L hatchback. Alloy wheels remain optional on the GL sedan and come standard on the GT hatchback. The GT hatchback also includes a rear spoiler, which remains optional on the other three versions. Options include a sunroof for all but the L hatchback.

Interior

All models come standard with bucket seats and cloth upholstery. The GS and GT hatchbacks also include an AM/FM audio system. This audio system remains optional in the GL sedan and L hatchback. A center console provides an option for all but the L hatchback.

Some optional features include air-conditioning, an AM/FM/cassette audio system, and an AM/FM/CD audio system.

Performance & Handling

The Accent’s 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine pairs with a five-speed manual transmission, although the four-speed automatic transmission remains optional. This engine produces 92 horsepower and 97 lb-ft of torque. Power brakes and power steering come standard. The 1997 Hyundai Accent GT hatchback even has a sport suspension.

Safety

The 1997 Hyundai Accent comes standard with driver and passenger front airbags, intermittent windshield wipers, and a rear window defroster. Anti-lock brakes remain exclusive to the sedan, as an option. An anti-theft alarm system provides an option for the GL sedan and L hatchback. The GL sedan also comes with the option of a keyless entry system. The GS hatchback and GT hatchback come standard with rear window wipers. The GT hatchback also comes equipped with fog lights.
