2009 Hyundai Azera Review

An affordable car with many perks at a practical price.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

In the world of full-size sedans, the past several decades have seen a massive amount of change. The majority of these cars used to be huge vehicles that more closely resembled a boat rather than a car. However, like all markets, full-size cars felt the need to change and evolve. This resulted in space efficient vehicles that have reasonable fuel economy even in the full-size range. Despite these changes, most full-size cars are still considered to be luxury vehicles due to their added amenities and base price. Hyundai is not necessarily a name associated with high-class luxury vehicles, but it does have quite a lovely car within the category in the Hyundai Azera.

Even though many people find the name, Azera, to be rather silly for any automobile, the vehicle itself is an affordable choice for people looking to break into the luxury full-size realm. In addition to the features that come standard, the 2009 Hyundai Azera made some valuable and pleasant changes to the overall package. The powertrain of the 2009 Azera, and the appearance of its interior, were upgraded to produce a nice vehicle that sometimes goes unnoticed in the full-size class.

The Range

Body Style: four-door sedan
Engine: 3.3-liter V-6 and 3.8-liter V-6
Transmission: five-speed automatic
Model: Hyundai Azera GLS and Hyundai Azera Limited

What's New

With so many people wanting to find an affordable luxury car that can still compete with the more well-known options, the 2009 Azera was able to make some very pleasant changes. Despite the fact that luxury cars are not top sellers, the Azera actually ends up being a reasonable purchase because of its extra amenities that come at a much lower price than the flagships of the luxury market. Revisions to improve both handling and performance were included for the 2009 model as were some cosmetic tweaks for the exterior and interior.

Exterior

The exterior design of the 2009 Hyundai Azera is pretty basic and standard in its overall appearance. The style is quite pleasing to the eye even though it is a bit conservative, which is a nice attribute if you desire an exterior design and can stand the test of time without seeming too old fashioned 10 years down the road. To perk up the design a little, a new chrome grille was added to the front of the 2009 model. This bit of shine actually works with the smooth shape, while still being able to make it seem new and trendy at the same time. Since it features high-quality materials, the Azera sports a very solid construction built to last despite its very moderate price tag.

Interior

The inside of the 2009 Azera is actually where this model sees the majority of its annual changes and modifications. The old-fashioned green tinted lights within the dash to highlight the display and console was replaced with a cool and modern light blue glow. Also, the 2009 model saw the addition of an auxiliary audio jack as well as a USB port, which includes iPod stereo controls.

The 2009 Azera holds true to widely acknowledged luxury features for its interior as well. Included in the standard Azera GLS package are heated mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifting knob, and satellite radio. The 2009 Azera Limited model has several additional perks to increase its luxury status, such as rain-sensing wipers and driver memory functions.

Performance & Handling

Both models of the 2009 Hyundai Azera have revised steering and suspension to allow for easier use and a smoother ride. However, the two formats of the car are powered differently. The 2009 Azera GLS comes with a 3.3-liter V-6 engine, which can produce 234 horsepower and 226 lb-ft of torque. The Azera Limited, on the other hand, has a bit of a boost in the power area through the help of a 3.8-liter V-6 engine that is capable of 263 horsepower and 257 lb-ft of torque.

Safety

In terms of airbags, the 2009 Hyundai Azera is equipped with front-seat side airbags, rear outboard side airbags, and full-length side-curtain airbags. Also, both models of the vehicle come complete with anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, traction control, and active front head restraints.

EPA Fuel Economy

Hyundai Azera GLS: 18/26 mpg city/highway
Hyundai Azera Limited: 17/26 mpg city/highway
