Introduced in 2009, the Hyundai Elantra Touring is a compact but spacious four-door hatchback. The vehicle was initially based on the European edition of the Elantra compact sedan. The Touring model features a longer wheelbase and different styling than the European edition, but still manages to maintain its influence. The 2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring is a four-door hatchback that's available in two trim levels: GLS and SE. The base model GLS version rides on 15-inch steel wheels and boasts features that include heated outside mirrors, power accessories, keyless entry, air conditioning, tilt-only steering wheel, cloth upholstery, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, and an audio system that's equipped with six speakers, a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack, satellite radio, and an iPod/USB interface. The GLS model offers the option of a Preferred package that contains 16-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, cruise control, driver's seat height and lumbar adjustment, improved upholstery, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with audio controls mounted on it, and a trip computer. The more upmarket SE trim level is equipped with all the features that come in the Preferred package while also boasting 17-inch alloy wheels, foglamps, a sunroof, leather upholstery, a leather-bound steering wheel, and front seat heating.

Both versions of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring come equipped with a 2.0-liter inline-four engine that's rated at 138 horsepower and outputs 136 lb-ft of torque. The engine is matched with a standard five-speed manual transmission; however, there is also an option to choose a four-speed automatic. The Elantra Touring model does respectably well in terms of fuel efficiency. The manual version is EPA is estimated at 23/31 mpg city/highway, while the automatic transmission model earns an estimate of 23/30 mpg city/highway.

Standard safety features on all versions of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring model include antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags, traction and stability control, active front head restraints, and side curtain airbags.

The Elantra Touring is capable of going from zero to 60 in just under nine seconds. While the engine can be heard to strain under high revs, the Hyundai Elantra Touring boasts a finely tuned suspension, which helps facilitate good handling. Ride quality is reported to be smooth and stable while cabin noise is minimal.

Hyundai Elantra Touring Evolution

Despite being fairly well-equipped, the introductory 2009 version of the Hyundai Elantra Touring was available in only a single trim level. Versions from 2010 and 2011 both offered drivers the choice of either the GLS or SE trim levels. Apart from the introduction of new trim levels and a few other minor alterations, the Hyundai Elantra Touring model has changed little over the years since it was first introduced.
