New for 2019

The Ioniq lineup focuses on safety improvements for 2019, offering driver attention alert and high beam safety assist, while the SEL trim receives automatic emergency braking, lane assist and automatic cruise control as standard features. Plug-in and EV models now offer standard remote charge management through Hyundai's Blue Link system.

Trim Levels (Interior and Exterior Options)

There are three distinct models in the Ioniq family: Electric, Hybrid, and Plug-in Hybrid. Each model offers a variety of trim levels.

2019 Ioniq Hybrid Blue: The entry-level model includes proximity key entry with push-button start, a 6-way power driver seat, a 7.0-inch infotainment system with SiriusXM radio and integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

2019 Ioniq Hybrid SEL: The midlevel trim adds a 10-way power driver seat with power lumbar support, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

The SEL Tech package adds automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, and a lane assist system.

2019 Ioniq Hybrid Limited: Upgrading to Limited adds a host of niceties, including a power sunroof, leather seating surfaces, Hyundai's Blue Link connected car service, auto-dimming rearview mirror with Homelink and compass, and LED interior illumination.

The Ultimate package adds the features from the SEL Tech package plus satellite navigation with an 8.0-inch touchscreen display and a 3-year subscription to Blue Link Guidance, wireless device charging, driver seat memory, rear vents, Infinity 8-speaker audio system, and rear parking sensors.

2019 Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid: The Plug-in version mirrors many of the standard features found in the non plug-in model and adds heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

2019 Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid Limited: Step up to the Limited for features such as a 10-way power driver seat with memory, and leather seating surfaces.

The Ultimate package adds HID headlights with the ability to "bend" around corners, auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink and compass, wireless device charging, satellite navigation with a three-year subscription to Blue Link, and an Infinity audio system with eight speakers.

2019 Ioniq Electric: Key features include a 7.0-inch touchscreen with integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, standard keyless entry and go, Blue Link Remote Charge access, rapid DC charging capability, and heated front seats.

2019 Ioniq Electric Limited: The Limited adds a power sunroof, a heat pump for efficient cabin heating, leather seating surfaces, wireless device charging, and satellite navigation with an 8.0-inch touchscreen.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The Hybrid is powered by a 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine churning out 104 hp and 109 lb-ft of torque connected to a 6-speed twin-clutch transmission driving the front wheels. The gasoline engine is assisted by an electric motor producing 43 hp and 125 lb-ft for a combined hybrid power rating of 139 hp. Mileage-wise, the Blue net an EPA rating of 57/59 city/highway and 55/54 in SEL and Limited trim levels.

The Plug-in Hybrid uses the same gasoline powertrain as the Hybrid, but bumps the power of the electric motor to 60 hp and 125 lb-ft, and increases battery capacity from 1.56 kWh to 8.9 kWh, enabling the Ioniq to travel up to 29 miles solely on electric power. EPA combined mileage for both trim levels is 119 MPGe and a combined rating of 52 mpg.

The Ioniq Electric is propelled by an electric motor producing 118 hp and 218 lb-ft of torque, resulting in an EPA rating of 136 MPGe. With a 28 kWh battery, the Ioniq is capable of traveling 124 miles from a full charge.

Safety

The 2018 Ioniq Hybrid is an IIHS 2018 Top Safety Pick, scoring Good in all crashworthiness categories and Superior in front crash prevention. Tests were performed with an Ioniq featuring the Tech package, which includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and a lane keeping assist system.

Utility (Cargo Space and Interior Room)

All three Ioniq models share the same four-door hatchback bodystyle. The cargo volume differs owing to battery placement in the Plug-in Hybrid and Electric models, with 23 cubic feet with the seats up; the Ioniq Hybrid offers 26.5 cubic feet. Front leg room measures 42.2 inches, with the rear providing 35.7 inches.

Technology

Every 2019 Ionic comes standard with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with integrated Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM. Higher trim levels offer wireless phone charging, an 8-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation and an 8-speaker Infinity audio system. Two USB ports are standard across the lineup.

Hyundai's Blue Link is available on several trim levels across the Ioniq lineup. Blue Link is a suite of connected services enabling the owners to control certain aspects of their car remotely through their smartphone, smartwatch, Alexa or Google Home devices. Features include remote start and climate control, remote lock and unlock, car diagnostics and service reminders, navigation assistance, and remote car finder. Ioniq Electric and Plug-in Hybrid owners can also monitor battery levels and schedule charging times.

What We Think

In our First Drive of the 2018 Ioniq Hybrid, we took note of Hyundai's decision to use a conventional geared transmission instead of the CVT found in most hybrid vehicles, saying "although the Toyota's CVT solution is more fluid and graceful, the Ioniq's six stepped gears make it react quicker and evades the CVT's notorious disconnect between throttle motions and engine noise." And in a test with its direct competition, the Toyota Prius, we pointed out that "the Ioniq is a tad cheaper relative to a trim-comparable Prius IV, but the exact amount of that price difference shows in its material quality."

On the fully electric front, our comparison test between the Ionic Electric and Chevrolet Bolt noted the significant different in range, though the Ioniq makes the most of those kilowatts, observing "Hyundai's first dedicated EV is the single-most efficient car in the U.S. at 136 mpg-e." The Ioniq, which is more affordably priced than those competitors, placed second in both of those head-to-head comparisons.
