1995 Hyundai Scoupe Review

Lacks the refinement of its rivals.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 1995 Hyundai Scoupe is a two-door coupe that is based on the Excel, and its name is a combination of the words sporty and coupe. It was launched in 1991 in the United States, and it is sold in the United Kingdom and other countries as the ""S Coupe."" The Excel is being discontinued this year and replaced with the more-modern Accent. As a result, even the 1995 Scoupe is in its final year of production. Although it had a short production run, it is known for being the first production application of the T15 turbocharger by Garrett Automotive Products.

The Range

Body Styles: coupe
Engines: 1.5-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Hyundai Scoupe, Hyundai Scoupe LS

What's New

The 1995 Hyundai Scoupe is in its last year of production, so there are no changes undertaken for the present year.

Exterior

Since the 1995 Hyundai Scoupe is based on the Excel, both cars share many common exterior characteristics including the overall shape. The last redesign it underwent was two years ago, when it got the current Hyundai logo, body-colored side moldings, new flush headlights, redesigned taillights, rear bumper, and front sheet metal. The wheelbase is 93.8 inches, while the length of the car is 165.9 inches and its width is 63.9 inches. The height of the coupe is around 50 inches.

Interior

The 1995 Hyundai Scoupe is supposed to be a 2+2 coupe, which means that it should ideally accommodate four adults with ease. The front seats are spacious enough to accommodate their two occupants, but the rear seats only offer enough legroom and headroom for adults of average stature. The driver’s seat is quite comfortable and faces an attractive, easily usable, and conveniently laid out dashboard. Visibility is good in all directions, but entry and exit is a little difficult for the front seats because of the automatic front seatbelts. It does not offer much beyond the average in terms of trunk space. However, folding the split-folding rear seat that is standard in all models can boost cargo space further.

Performance & Handling

The 1995 Hyundai Scoupe is available with two versions of a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine. The first engine is a single overhead cam version that delivers 92 horsepower. The second and more powerful engine is a turbocharged version that delivers 115 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque. It has a big benefit that boosts the performance of both engines: a short final-drive ratio. This particular advantage gives the coupe faster acceleration from standstill. Despite the advantage, it is still very much comparable to that of the Excel. In other words, the coupe is quite sluggish, especially with the automatic shift. Even reserve passing power is missing. The above example is, of course, that of the Scoupe with the base engine. With the turbocharged engine, the coupe picks up in terms of performance. However, this engine is as loud as the base engine and has poorer fuel economy.

Safety

The 1995 Hyundai Scoupe performed well in safety tests conducted by the NHTSA. It received four stars for both driver and passenger safety during the frontal impact tests.
