Overview

The 2005 Hyundai Sonata has a few new features this year, mostly seen in the LX models. Three models are available with two different transmission types. The exterior features come in a fair number while the interior features and options are plentiful. Power and performance on this vehicle are good with two different engine options. Safety is on the higher end and fuel economy is average. The Hyundai Sonata is an average choice for vehicle owners and makes a good lasting car for in-city driving.

What's New

The 2005 Hyundai Sonata adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a HomeLink remote transmitter for the LX models.

Exterior

The 2005 Hyundai Sonata comes in eight colors, body color front and rear bumpers, dual power mirrors, side moldings and door handles, front mud guards, a grille with chrome surrounding, aerodynamic halogen headlamps, front fog lights, tinted glass, and variable intermittent speed sensitive windshield wipers and washers. The 15-inch steel wheels have covers and include all-season Michelin tires for any weather. A compact spare tire is also included. The GLS limited and LX models add chrome inserts for the bumpers and moldings and shut-off timers for the heated power mirrors as well as 16-inch, 10-spoke aluminum alloy wheels. The GL has an optional power tilt and slide glass sunroof.

Interior

The 2005 Hyundai Sonata comes with many interior features and options including cloth multi-adjustable reclining front bucket seats with adjustable headrests, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, front center console with armrest, storage and dual cup holders, full cut pile carpeting, leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel, tachometer, coolant temperature, odometer, power windows with a driver side auto-down feature, power door locks, remote keyless entry system, cruise control, trunk and fuel filler door remote releases, anti-theft alarm system, air-conditioning, rear seat heater ventilation, rear window defroster with timer, digital quartz clock, cloth insert door trim, front door map pockets, driver and front passenger sun visors with a driver illuminated vanity mirror, front and rear assist grips, leather-wrapped shift knob, front seatback pockets, two coat hangers and a cargo area 12-volt power outlet. The audio system is a six-speaker AM/FM/CD player stereo system and fixed mast antenna. The GLS models upgrade with a wood grain interior trim, deluxe cloth front bucket seats with lumbar, deluxe cut pile carpeting, carpeted floor mats, cabin air filter and deluxe cloth insert door trim. The GLS models also add a cassette player to the audio system and a power antenna. The LX model upgrades with leather reclining front bucket seats with eight-way power driver seat, HomeLink universal garage door opener, automatic temperature control and cabin air filter, simulated leather insert door trim, and electro chromic rearview mirror.

Performance & Handling

The 2005 Hyundai Sonata comes with a 2.4-liter, inline four-cylinder engine or a 2.7-liter, V-6 engine. The inline four-cylinder engine is rated at 138 horsepower, which provides for 147 lb-ft of torque while the 2.7-liter, V-6 engine is rated at 170 horsepower, which provides for 181 lb-ft of torque. The transmissions of choice are between a five-speed manual with overdrive and a four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Automatic transmission includes a transmission shift interlock. The Sonata is front-wheel drive and has a 95-amp alternator. The Sonata has an independent double-wishbone MacPherson strut front suspension with gas shocks and multi-link rear suspension with trailing arms. Both the front and rear include stabilizer bars. The Sonata includes power-assisted speed-sensitive rack and pinion steering and power four-wheel disc brakes.

Safety

The 2005 Hyundai Sonata earned five out of five stars in its rollover crash test rating and four stars in driver and passenger front and side impact ratings. The Sonata includes second-generation front airbags with a passenger detection system and driver and front passenger seat-mounted side impact airbags. A front three-point seatbelt system includes height adjustable anchors, belt pretensioners and force limiters. There are three rear child tether anchors and two rear outboard LATCH child seat anchors. The steering column is energy absorbing, the body has side reinforcements, the front and rear have crumple zones, and the hood has buckling creases and safety stops. ABS is not standard but optional on this vehicle.
