2012 Hyundai Veloster Review

For the rambunctious among you

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview
The Hyundai Veloster debuts this year. This cutting-edge three-door hatchback will bring even more competition to the already crowded compact coupe class. The Veloster features a unique third door on the passenger side for easier rear-seat access. Also included in this boldly styled coupe is Hyundai's Blue Link telematics system, Pandora Internet radio with a seven-inch touch screen display. Powering the Veloster is a 138-horsepower 1.6-liter direct-injected four-cylinder engine with 123 pound-feet of torque mated to Hyundai's first six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. Safety has become a focus for Hyundai, and it is evident on the Veloster. It's loaded with a Vehicle Stability Management system that manages electronic stability control and the power steering, while also featuring six airbags and a state of the art braking system. The hatchback's unique design is inspired by a motorcycle. The A-pillars give the glass a motorcycle helmet visor appearance, providing a sporty, aggressive presence lacking on some compact coupes. This sleek vehicle is also very light. At just 2584 pounds, it is 400 pounds lighter than the Scion tC. Hyundai's sporty compact may make a splash in the inexpensive coupe segment.

The Range

Body style: Three-door hatchback
Engines: 1.6L I-4
Transmissions: Six-speed manual, six-speed dual clutch automatic
Models: Hyundai Veloster

What's New

The 2012 Hyundai Veloster is an all-new model offered by Hyundai. The small hatchback has an added third door on the passenger side for easier access to the back seat. The Veloster features a multi-function seven-inch touch screen display, which is equipped with Pandora Internet radio, video game connectivity, and hands-free Bluetooth. The all-new 1.6-liter engine gets up to 40 mpg, better highway fuel efficiency than the hybrid Honda CR-Z.

Exterior

The Veloster's unique design is inspired by a high-performance sport bike, Hyundai says. The car features A-pillars that give the glass a motorcycle helmet appearance. The front of the vehicle is an aggressive form of Hyundai's signature hexagonal front grille, with hood scoop detailing and LED daytime running lights. Optional packages include a chrome grille, piano black highlights, fog lights, and a massive panoramic sunroof. Also included are center-mounted chrome-dual exhausts.

Interior

The interior of the Veloster also has a motorcycle theme. The center stack and controls resemble a sport bike fuel tank. The air vents are inspired by motorcycle tailpipes, and the floor console mirrors the seat of a bike. Throughout the interior are metallic accents that complement the interior features. This coupe has an interior volume of 105.3 cubic feet and 15.5 cubic feet of trunk space.

Performance & Handling

The Veloster doesn't have the most power at 138 horsepower, but that doesn't mean it isn't fun to drive. Hyundai's new hatchback has sport-tuned electric power steering that adjusts to changing driving conditions. A quick-ratio steering rack is used for crisp feel on turn-in. The Veloster has a turning radius of 34.1 feet, better than the Mini Cooper and tC to name a few. Acceleration from 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds isn't fast, but this little car is sportier than it may seem.

Safety

Driver and front passenger airbags, driver and front passenger airbags, and front and rear passengers side air curtains are all standard. The Veloster also features ABS with 4-wheel disc brakes, child safety locks, and tire pressure monitoring system. Vehicle stability management, electronic stability control system with traction control system are come standard as well.
