2003 Infiniti FX35 Review

A good option for crossover enthusiasts who can sacrifice some cargo room.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2003 Infiniti FX35 debuts as a new model from the carmaker to satisfy car buyers who remain reluctant to enter the SUV market and prefer to stick with what many call a tall station wagon or crossover SUV. This new entry from Infiniti offers drivers a powerful, performance-focused crossover SUV with optional all-wheel drive and precise handling. Anyone who doesn’t like the price or doesn’t need the added power of the V-8-powered FX45 should take a look at the FX35.

The Range

Body Styles: crossover
Engines: 3.5-liter V-6
Transmissions: five-speed automatic
Models: Infiniti FX35

What's New

The Infiniti FX35 starts as an all-new model for 2003.

Exterior

The 2003 Infiniti FX35 classifies as a crossover, measuring 189 inches long, 76 inches wide, and sitting on a wheelbase of 112 inches. Overall, the FX35 stands 65 inches high and clears the ground by 7.6 inches. Infiniti offers its crossover in a variety of colors, including Black Obsidian, Diamond Graphite, Ivory Pearl, Laser Red, Golden Sand, Brilliant Silver, Beryllium 16, and Liquid Copper. With so many options, any buyer is sure to find a vehicle that suits his taste.

Exterior features include variable intermittent wipers, a rear wiper, a rear defogger, 18-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, cargo tie-downs, and a rear liftgate door. A spare tire mounts inside the car.

Interior

The interior of the 2003 Infiniti FX35 features a four-way power passenger seat with height adjustment, an eight-way power driver’s seat with height adjustment, bucket front seats, a split-folding rear seatback, a folding center armrest, reclining rear seats, and cloth upholstery. Convenience features include cruise control and power steering. Cup holders in the front and rear of the vehicle, an overhead console with storage, front seatback storage, door pockets, and a front console increase storage. Cargo capacity totals 27.4 cubic feet with all of the seats in place, and this expands to a maximum 64.5 cubic feet.

Additional features include three-zone climate control, 12V power outlets, reading lights in the front and rear of the vehicle, a cargo area light, floor mats, dual illuminating vanity mirrors, and leather trim on the center console, steering wheel, doors, and shift knob.

Entertainment is provided by an AM/FM radio, six-disc CD player, and radio data system supported by six speakers.

Performance & Handling

The 2003 Infiniti FX35 comes equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 and five-speed automatic transmission. Together they produce 280 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. All models of the FX35 use either rear drive or all-wheel drive. The crossover has a manageable turning circle of 38.7 feet. Handling is very good for this model, and the V-6 feels strong, so if you don’t need the extra power of the V-8, opt for the FX35 over the FX45.

Safety

Safety features in the 2003 FX35 are extensive, including four-wheel ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency braking assist, and traction control. Theft prevention includes an anti-theft alarm system and an engine immobilizer. All 2003 Infiniti FX35s include airbags to protect occupants, including dual front side-mounted airbags and front and rear head airbags. The driver and passengers also benefit from head restraint whiplash protection systems and adjustable headrests. Other safety features include front and rear ventilated disc brakes, xenon HID headlights, fog lights, front seat belt pretensioners, child seat anchors, and rear-door child safety locks.
