In the oversaturated world of SUVs, it is hard to make a vehicle that stands out. Some manufacturers go for powerful performance, some with off-road capabilities, and others with spacious interiors.
Infiniti took great pains to change its image over the last few years, making vehicles that perform well and have a different look from the rest. The Infiniti FX45 is one of those vehicles. It is a four-door midsize crossover SUV that behaves more like a sedan than anything else. The style and performance of the FX45 is meant to straddle the line between those who want sport car performance and those that require the practicality of a spacious passenger vehicle.
The styling of the FX45 might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it sure is eye catching. The smooth curves, snubbed nose, and sloping hatchback sets it apart from other SUV models on the market. The larger wheels in the back help the FX45 hug the pavement in a manner more like a sedan, and the performance is improved. Don’t expect off-road performance from the X45.
The interior is spacious and well equipped. Extra features include entertainment for the family amongst other luxuries. Although there is ample space for passengers, cargo space is somewhat limited in comparison to other SUV models.

What's New
The 2006 Infiniti FX45 gets a nice refresh this year with a new bumper design, new grille, and a reconfigured wheel set. The engine received a power upgrade as well, putting out 320 horsepower. The FX45 also gets a lot of new standard features including a rearview monitor, 300-watt Bose sound system, and hands-free Bluetooth connectivity. The center console has also received a new design, and the instrument monitors now have electronic luminescence. Aluminum and wood trim has been added to the interior as well. The Premium package offered in previous years is now standard fare on the FX45 that includes a sunroof, automatic headlamps, aluminum roof rails, cargo net, cargo cover, and a universal garage door opener.
Exterior
The exterior of the Infiniti FX45 is one of its more eye-catching qualities. The slope of the roof makes for an interesting silhouette. The offset tire sizes makes the FX45 aggressively hug the pavement, which can be felt when making fast turns.
Standard features on the exterior include: HID headlamps, sunroof, steering wheel audio controls, auto headlights, and 20-inch aluminum wheels.
Interior
The interior has a lot of space for five passengers. Legroom is quite ample, although the sloping roof does create some headroom issues that can’t be avoided. Otherwise the interior is very comfortable. Getting in and out of the vehicle is a breeze. All of the seats are covered in leather as well. Unfortunately, you wouldn’t expect so much hard plastic for the price you’re paying.
The sloping roof has another unfortunate side effect: it severally diminishes visibility from the vehicle. Luckily, the FX45 comes equipped with a rearview monitor that allows you to see when parking.
Cargo room is a bit tight in comparison with other SUVs on the market. Only 65 cubic feet is available in comparison to the 80 cubic foot allowance in most SUVs on the market.
Performance & Handling
The FX45 comes standard with a 4.5-liter V-8 engine that spits out a heart stopping 320 horsepower. The engine is controlled by a five-speed automatic transmission that also has manual controls for those wanting greater control over their ride. The FX45 is capable of accelerating zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds.
The handling is pretty smooth, but the suspension is a bit stiff for potholes and rough areas. Don’t expect to take the FX45 off-road. The FX35 version of this vehicle has a bit of a softer ride for those interested.
Safety
The FX45 comes packed with standard safety features including four-wheel ventilated disc brakes, anti-lock braking system, front and rear side curtains, as well as traction and stability control. An optional Lane Departure Warning System (LDW) that warns drivers when they veer from the designated lane.
The FX45 received top marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for front and side impacts.
