The G35 is the closest you’ll get to a BMW 3 Series without actually going out and buying one. It’s what is underneath the hood. Like the 3 Series, the G35 gets the Nissan FM platform, placing the engine in the front-middle of the vehicle. It's placed slightly behind the front wheels to give the car better balance during turns and acceleration.
The G35 is bigger and taller than the rest, but this doesn’t affect power. The G35 actually weighs the same amount due to lightweight materials being used throughout. The aluminum hood and front suspension components are responsible for this lower weight.
The engine is another aspect of the G35 that makes it a good choice for those who want excellent performance. The V-6 under the hood is the same as the ones in the Maxima and Altima. The engine has 24-valves, dual-overhead cams, variable valve timing, and electronically controlled throttle. For a vehicle with this price tag that all means extra value.
The Range
Body Style: Coupe or sedan
Engines: 3.5-liter V-6 engine
Transmissions: Six-speed manual transmission, five-speed automatic
Models: Infiniti G35
What's New
Most of the changes to the G35 were made to the coupe version. The Sport’s package offered in the previous year is now standard on coupe models with manual transmission. Additions to the Sport package include a new front fascia, side sills, and a optional rear spoiler. Active rear-steering is also available on the coupe for better sport performance. The rear-steering system allows the coupe to transfer power according to different acceleration and steering situations. The steering rack is also sped up with the Sport package for quicker turns. The Infiniti G35 also receives standard HID headlights and Bluetooth connectivity.
Exterior
The G35 comes in either a four-door sedan or a two-door coupe. Both models have a sleek, curing design that matches the changes made by Infiniti across the line the year before.
Standard features include 17-inch wheels as well as HID headlights.
Interior
The interior of the vehicle is very spacious. A long wheelbase in the sedan provides driver and passengers plenty of legroom. Head and shoulder room is also generous. The coupe does have some head and shoulder room issues in the back seat due to the sloping design of the roof, but legroom is still ample in the front and the back. The material quality of the interior design is OK, but doesn’t really match some of the competition. Storage space in the trunk is 14.5 cubic feet for the sedan, and 7.8 cubic feet for the coupe.
The dashboard is one area where the design shines. A T-shaped instrument panel is chock-full of features. The gauges tilt with the steering wheel when adjustments are made, making for a tailor made driving experience. Another added pleasure is the added seat cushion in the driver-seat that conforms to the form of the driver for a more comforting ride.
Standard features on the G35 include automatic climate controls, leather upholstery, eight-way power driver-seat, four-way power passenger-seat, heated seats, and an in-dash six-disc CD changer.
There is two option packages: Premium and Sport. The Premium package includes dual-climate controls, rear vents, upgraded 225-watt Bose sound system, sunroof, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Sport package includes the six-speed manual transmission system. A la carte options include a navigation system, and a wood trim interior.
Performance & Handling
The G35 comes equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 280 horsepower with 270 lb-ft of torque when paired with the five-speed automatic transmission. The six-speed automatic transmission is paired with a V-6 that produces 298 horsepower with 250 lb-ft of torque. The six-speed V-6 can top our on a straightaway at 298 mph.
The drive itself is very exciting. Good midrange torque is a surprise as well as the quick acceleration. The handling is as good as anything else. The exhaust noise makes you feel like you’re driving a bigger car.
Safety
The G35 comes equipped with a lot of standard safety features. Standard bits and bobs include: four-wheel anti-lock brakes, side airbags, and side curtain airbags. You also get stability control as a standard feature. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) received the best grade for front impacts and a near perfect score for side impacts.
