1996 Infiniti I30 Review

Where style, luxury, and performance meet.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Bringing together luxury and performance, the 1996 Infiniti I30 is a midsize sedan that comes at a mid-range price for a luxury vehicle. Offering all the esteem, excellent features, and peak performance found in its higher-priced European competition, it brings style and elegance at a far more reasonable price to consumers. However, critics say that it is just a dressed-up version of Nissan's very successful Maxima.

Equipped with a rear spoiler, wider tires, and sport transmission, the 1996 Infiniti I30 also comes in a Touring model. Designed for better performance, the Touring model also comes with all the outstanding standard features that the base model offers. With a roomy, comfortable interior, and proven performance, it is not just a classy vehicle to drive, it is also a lot of fun on the road.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 3.0-liter six-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed manual
Models: Infiniti I30, Infiniti I30 Touring

What's New

The Infiniti I30 is introduced as a competitively-priced luxury sport sedan this year.

The 1996 Infiniti I30 was based on the Maxima and that's what it looks like, other than the wheels and the imposing chrome grill. It has a rounded, sporty style for a large luxury sedan. Including special factory paint, tinted windows, and 15-inch alloy wheels, it takes the basic design of Nissan’s Maxima with a few luxury adornments.

The 1996 Infiniti I30 features an extensive list of impressive interior standard features, including cruise control, power windows and door locks, heated front seats, power moonroof, leather seating, air-conditioning with automatic climate control, center console, and power driver and front seats.

Performance & Handling

The 1996 Infiniti I30 producing 190 horsepower and 205 lb-ft of torque comes equipped with a standard 3.0-liter V-6, a sporty engine with excellent performance. Although four-speed automatic transmission is optional, the five-speed manual offers better acceleration, able to attain zero to 60 in just seven seconds. Handling is good on the base model, and excellent on the Touring model.

Safety features for the 1996 Infiniti I30 include driver and passenger front airbags, anti-theft alarm system, and four-wheel anti-lock brake systems (ABS). The Touring model includes fog lights as a standard feature as well. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives three stars out of five on passenger crash tests and four stars on driver-side crash tests. The International Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) was not quite as impressed and gave its lowest ranking of ""poor"" after performing frontal crash tests.
