1999 Infiniti I30 Review

Upscale style at an entry-level price.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 1999 Infiniti I30 is inspired by and based on the Nissan Maxima, a sporty car offered by Nissan, Infiniti’s parent company. With a price that is much more affordable than the competing Lexus and Mercedes-Benz models, it's considered a good value for the accompanying price tag. On the other hand, the Nissan Maxima, with comparable performance and a lower price, is considered an even better value for the money spent.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 3.0-liter V-6
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Infiniti I30, Infiniti I30 Limited, Infiniti I30 Touring

What's New

The 1999 Infiniti I30 gets traction control, an engine immobilizer, and a redesigned audio faceplate.

The 1999 Infiniti I30 installs a defogger on the rear window to help with visibility during colder days. A power moonroof helps keep the air flow fresh and everyone cool on hot summer days, while tinted glass helps the driver and passengers with increased privacy. Alloy embrace 15-inch wheels on the base model and the Limited and 16-inch wheels on the Touring. Fog lights help the driver see in foggy conditions and are a stylish addition that help the other drivers on the road see the car to avoid any costly accidents. It also has heated power exterior rearview mirrors for visibility and convenience as well as a spoiler that adds some extra style to the body design.

The 1999 Infiniti I30 gets standard air-conditioning and automatic temperature control across all models with seating capacity at five people. The power moonroof is standard on the Limited and Touring but will cost the buyer extra on the base model. Standard equipment across all models includes speed sensitive power steering, powered windows, a tilting steering wheel, and remote keyless entry. The auto-dimming rearview mirror is available for extra on the base model but is standard on the Limited and Touring. Cell phone wiring is available on all three models but comes with a substantial extra charge. All models have both a cassette player and CD player with six speakers. Leather trim on the shift knob and steering wheel are standard on all models. Leather upholstery is not available on the base model but is standard on the other two. Power driver and front passenger seats are standard on all three models and heated front seats are available for extra.

Performance & Handling

The 1999 Infiniti I30's speed-sensitive steering helps keep the steering quick and responsive even at highway speed. The front wheel independent suspension and solid rear axle give the driver a firm and pleasant ride. Some drivers report unsteadiness when the vehicle gets above 50,000 miles and claim the ignition wiring is faulty. On the other hand, the same drivers report that even after test-driving some American-made cars with fewer miles, it still has a better ride and is more fun to drive. Ratings from the average driver for performance and reliability are three out of five.

The 1999 Infiniti I30 has a four-wheel anti-lock brake system that is supplemented with traction control to keep the wheels tightly gripped to the roadway. Driver and front passenger airbags are installed, and the side mounted airbags are only available in the front. The crash test ratings are four stars for the passenger and driver.
