1999 Infiniti Q45 Review

Gives BMW and Mercedes a run for their money.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 1999 Infiniti Q45 is a rear-drive sedan in its second generation. It's built with a distinctive style, different from the I30 and G20 sedans and more like a luxury sedan. It's equipped with a larger V-8 engine and more luxury features inside. The larger engine gives the Q45 less efficient fuel economy than the I30 and G20 sedans. But this is a valid sacrifice for most owners who enjoy the extra luxury features, such as leather trim and a four-wheel independent electronically-modulated suspension system.

The Range

Body styles: sedan
Engines: 4.1-liter V-8
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Infiniti Q45, Infiniti Q45 Touring

What's New

The 1999 Infiniti Q45 debuts with a few changes in its exterior and interior design. A new sunroof and the return of the older style analog in-dash clock are now available, and the front has also been restyled to have less chrome than the earlier models.

The 1999 Infiniti Q45 has heated, power, exterior rearview mirrors. The headlamps are high-intensity discharge and front fog lights are installed for increased visibility. The rear window has a defroster and blinds are available to block out any unwanted, excess sunlight. The spoiler is not available on the base model and costs extra on the Touring. The base model has 16-inch alloy wheels and the Touring gets 17-inch alloy wheels.

The 1999 Infiniti Q45 comes with automatic temperature control, air-conditioning, and the power moonroof as available options. The driver seat has memory settings to record the driver’s favorite power control settings. The front seats are heated bucket seats as well as power adjustable, while the rear seats are equipped with bench style seats. Both the front and rear seats have a center armrest, although only the front center armrest has a storage space inside. Maximum seating capacity in this vehicle is five.

The 1999 Infiniti Q45 gets a steering wheel that resembles a tilt like the other Infiniti sedans and is also telescopic on both models. The rearview mirror is auto-dimming, and a programmable universal remote is available with both models. Cell phone wiring is available, but it comes with a substantial price increase. The audio controls for the eight-speaker audio system are found on the steering wheel. It also comes with a CD player in addition to the older style cassette player and the usual AM/FM radio. Standard leather upholstery and leather trim on the shift knob and steering wheel is available. Furthermore, it comes with power windows and remote keyless entry is installed on all models.

Performance & Handling

The 1999 Infiniti Q45 carries another difference between most Infiniti sedans, which is the four-wheel independent suspension that replaces the sportier models’ solid rear axle. The power steering is speed sensitive to adjust for easy handling even at higher speeds, so the driver can retain complete control over the vehicle. The zero to 60 acceleration speed is satisfying after it accelerates beyond 15 mph; the power starts building. It can take turns quickly with minimal body lean. The suspension on the Touring can be adjusted for a firmer or softer ride, and is electronically-modulated to allow for minimal body roll through automatic shock valve pressure adjustments.

The 1999 Infiniti Q45 has the same safety features listed as other less expensive and less luxurious Infiniti sedans. The brake system is a four-wheel anti-lock brake system, and driver and front passenger head airbags and side mounted airbags are installed. Traction control helps the car maintain a solid grip on the roadway and prevents also helps to prevent sliding. There is also an anti-theft alarm installed to alert the owner or anyone else nearby when the vehicle is being damaged or broken in to.
