2000 Infiniti Q45 Review

Elegant as a show horse, powerful as a wild stallion.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2000 Infiniti Q45's release coincided with the 10th year of its production. The versions of the flagship sedan included an anniversary edition. This package came with some exterior and interior upgrades. The Infiniti brand is the luxury division of the Japanese car brand Nissan, and the rear-drive Q45 is its top offering.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 4.1-liter V-8
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Infiniti Q45, Infiniti Q45 Touring, Infiniti Q45 Anniversary

What's New

The special 2000 Infiniti Q45 Anniversary edition gets leather wood treatment for the steering wheel, wood elements for the interior, and the door handles that's finished with the same color as the car's body. Aside from the anniversary edition, it gets an active head restraint for its front seats for added safety.

The 2000 Infiniti Q45 does not sport a look typical of other luxury car brands. Instead, it has elegant lines that give is its distinct character. The nose slopes down, the roofline is thin, and the rear glass rakes steeply. It is a good blend of luxury styling and performance. It rolls on 17-inch alloy rims to add to its aggressive appearance. The combination lamps on the rear end also were redesigned and now sports a glass sunroof.

The 2000 Infiniti Q45 remains faithful to how consumers appreciate a luxury interior. Practically things that aren't hugged by leather are covered with wood. High-quality leather comes in black, stone beige, or beige. The front occupants will be comfortable in bucket seats that provide good support and can be adjusted in different directions to fit the desired position. The seats are quite low than usual, but this does not result in any discomfort. The visibility is not an issue though and the lower seats give occupants that sense of security being surrounded by much of the structure. There is a memory switch that allows occupants to set two positions for the side mirrors and seats. The sound system comes from the popular brand Bose.

The 2000 Infiniti Q45 comes standard with essential features like power steering, speed-sensitive wipers, cruise control, vanity mirrors, defroster for the rear windows, and power windows. On the dash, the classic looking analog clock makes a comeback, which has been featured in previous models as a signature item.

The 2000 Infiniti Q45 also comes with Interior Light Logic technology that turns the lights on when consumers are entering or exiting. This system is a nice touch since the cabin is not blasted with bright lighting when the doors are opened. There also are soft light elements on the console and door panels that make operating switches or finding stuff easier.

Performance & Handling

The 2000 Infiniti Q45 variants sport a 4.1-liter V-8 power plant that gives out 266 horsepower. While it's actually based on the Indy V-8 used in the Indy Racing League, it also has variable valve timing that aptly adjusts the valve opening and closing depending on the load and speed. Performance has never been an issue with Infiniti brands. The peak torque can be achieved at about 4000 rpm, but drivers can tap into the same power in lower revs. This results to excellent acceleration even on lower speeds, and the throttle is pretty responsive. It can blast from zero to 60 mph in a little more than seven seconds.

The 2000 Infiniti Q45's powerful engine is coupled with a four-speed automatic gearbox that offers very precise shifting. Slippery conditions are well handled by a limited-slip differential with good traction control. It's very stable on the straight lines and firmly controlled during turns, while the driver will not feel any hesitation on the road. The handling is very good and primarily attributed to the Macpherson struts in front and the multilink suspension setup in the rear. The Touring has a sportier feel into it due to a more aggressive setup for its suspension.

The 2000 Infiniti Q45 is equipped with front airbags and side airbags. The car also features pick resistant locks. It also has a Personalized Protection System that turns off the ignition in case the doors are breached. Thieves will have to deal with about 60,000 numeric codes before bypassing this system.
