2020 Infiniti QX50 Overview

The Infiniti QX50 is a five-seat luxury crossover that emphasizes style inside and out. Swoopy exterior design helps it stand out, while upscale interior appointments keep occupants swathed in comfort. It debuted in 2019 with the world's first production variable-compression engine under the hood.

For 2020, the QX50 receives a revised infotainment system that now includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Previously optional driver-assist features are now included on all trim levels. Three new trim levels diversify the lineup, including the special-edition Edition 30 built to commemorate Infiniti's 30 years in business.

What We Think

We've spent plenty of time driving the QX50. After including it in our 2019 SUV of the Year competition, we added one to our long-term test fleet for a yearlong evaluation. All the while, it's pleased us in some ways and frustrated us in others.

The QX50's variable compression engine (called VC-Turbo by Infiniti) was a breakthrough; it's the world's first production engine that can alter its compression ratio on the fly. But as much as Infiniti positions it as a QX50 selling point, in the real world it's one of the vehicle's biggest weaknesses. It provides reasonably quick acceleration, but its power delivery is anything but linear—it can never seem to decide what the optimal compression is, resulting in inconsistent responses from the gas pedal. That's not helped by the continuously variable transmission, which badly fakes "gear shifts" and doesn't feel well synchronized to the engine. Add in a somewhat laggy turbocharger, and the QX50's engine feels like it's connected to the engine via bungee cord.

Not to mention, at the end of our yearlong test, the engine disappointingly underperformed in its EPA fuel economy ratings.

Nonetheless, when equipped with the right options, the QX50 is nearly peerless as a commuter or road-tripper. Infiniti and Nissan's ProPilot Assist suite of driver-assist tech is excellent; we once called it Infiniti's best technology. Its adaptive cruise control, distance control assist, and steering assist combine to make a car that verges on self-driving. It's almost too good—inattentive drivers may be lulled into distracting daydreams. That said, it can be a bit jerky in stop-and-go traffic.

What's more, the QX50's terrific comfort makes drives long or short enjoyable. At the conclusion of a 2,000 mile road trip we likened it to a La-Z-Boy on wheels. That's aided by the interior, which features lovely design and abundant soft-touch materials, with some funky cool—and intentionally mismatched—color options available.

However, the infotainment system was a source of constant frustration. It was slow, glitchy, and infuriatingly complex, and we never figured out how to efficiently navigate its foibles. Infiniti has thoroughly updated the infotainment system for 2020, and while we haven't yet had a chance to test it in person, we're not convinced the dual-screen setup will be any easier to use than the system in our 2019 QX50. At least it now includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The QX50 proves how the latest isn't always the greatest. Its drivetrain is novel yet still feels in need of development. If you can learn to drive around it, though, the QX50's comfort and driver-assist tech will deliver you to your destination in serenity. We'll hold out hope that 2020's infotainment update solves the previous system's problems, but other compact luxury crossovers on the market that have proven themselves to be calibrated and complete. Therefore, even with infotainment updates, the QX50 may not be the best option in the segment.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The QX50 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine that features a novel variable compression ratio system, which is connected to a continuously variable transmission. It produces 268 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive optional on all trim levels.

The EPA rates fuel economy for front-wheel drive models at 23/29 mpg city/highway for 26 combined mpg. All-wheel drive models lose one mpg in each measure. However, over more than 20,000 miles driven in our long-term test fleet, our average fuel economy was only 20.3 mpg.

Variable Compression Ratio Engine: Holy Grail or Gimmick Fail?

An engine's compression ratio is a key factor in its power output and fuel efficiency. Generally, low compression can have benefits for power output, while high compression can improve fuel efficiency. Up until Infiniti's debut of the QX50's VC-Turbo engine, it was only possible to have one or the other.

Infiniti's variable compression is accomplished by an elaborate set of intermediary links between the crankshaft and piston connecting rods. Although we found it in need of refinement in this first iteration, it's nonetheless an interesting approach that could bring great benefits to internal combustion engines. Read all about in our VC-Turbo overview and in-depth breakdown.

Safety

From the NHTSA, the QX50 earns a five-star (out of five) overall safety rating, which is comprised of five-star frontal and side crash scores, and a four-star rollover score.

From the IIHS, the QX50 receives top Good crashworthiness scores. Additionally, its standard automatic emergency braking system earned the top Superior score, as it avoided collisions in both 12 mph and 25 mph tests. Its standard LED headlights earn an Acceptable score, the second best, but the upgraded headlights included on Autograph trim earn a Marginal score, the second worst.

For 2020, new driver-assist and active safety features are added as standard equipment. The suite now includes blind-spot monitoring; forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking; lane-departure warning; rear cross traffic alert with automatic braking; and automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist remain optional extras.

Utility (Cargo Space and Interior Room)

QX50 models without a moonroof have 31.4 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row. Models with a moonroof have 31.1 cubic feet behind the second row. Folding the standard 60/40 split second row seats expands cargo volume to 65.1 cubic feet in models without a moonroof and 64.4 cubic feet in models with a moonroof.

Front-row headroom measures 41.0 inches in models without a moonroof and 40 inches in models with a moonroof; legroom is 39.6 inches. Second-row headroom measures 39.1 inches in models without a moonroof and 38.4 inches in models with a moonroof; legroom measures 38.7 inches.

Technology

Updated for 2020, the QX50 uses a dual-display infotainment system comprised of an 8.0-inch touchscreen on top and a 7.0-inch touchscreen below. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now included on all models. Three USB ports are positioned between the front seats, and there's an additional USB charge port for the rear seats. All models feature a vehicle information display mounted in the gauge cluster, and a head-up display is available on higher trims. A six-speaker audio system is standard, while a 16-speaker Bose premium sound system is an optional extra. Every trim level features a backup camera and rear parking sensors, but higher-end models get a 360-degree view parking camera system.

Trim Levels

2020 Infiniti QX50 Pure: Entry-level QX50 models roll on 19-inch alloy wheels, have LED headlights and taillights, chrome door handles and window trim, a body-color spoiler, and dual polished exhaust tips. The windows receive acoustic- and UV-reducing coatings. Seating surfaces are upholstered in a leatherette material, and are power-adjustable in the front, with painted aluminum trim pieces throughout the cabin. The steering wheel and shifter are leather-wrapped, but the steering column is manually adjustable. Convenience features include a power liftgate, keyless unlocking with push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, and power windows with one-touch up/down for the driver.

2020 Infiniti QX50 Luxe: A moonroof, front LED fog lights, and aluminum roof rails are added to Luxe trim. Convenience upgrades include an auto-dimming rearview mirror and universal garage door opener. Real aluminum trim pieces give the cabin a higher-end feel.

2020 Infiniti QX50 Essential: Going Essential adds a few technology and luxury features. To the exterior, heated side mirrors and rain-sensing windshield wipers are added. Inside, the front seats are heated. The infotainment system gains GPS navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio compatibility, plus front parking sensors and a 360-degree view parking camera system. An additional system automatically calls emergency services in the event of a crash.

2020 Infiniti QX50 Edition 30: Built to commemorate Infiniti's 30th anniversary, the QX50 Edition 30 builds on Essential trim with special-edition touches and additional content. These include dark-finish 20-inch alloy wheels, a body-color rear diffuser, Edition 30 badging on the trunk lid and front-door sill plates, dark chrome exterior brightwork, a black mesh grille, black side mirror caps, upgraded adaptive LED headlights, and a dark grey headliner. Driver-assist technology, such as adaptive cruise control, distance control, and lane-departure corrective steering are also bundled in Edition 30 trim.

2020 Infiniti QX50 Sensory: Sensory trim adds 20-inch machine-finished alloy wheels to the exterior. Inside, the seats are leather-appointed and gain memory functionality for the driver's seat, the steering wheel is heated and power adjustable, and the 16-speaker premium audio system is added.

2020 Infiniti QX50 Autograph: Top-end Autograph models roll on trim-specific dark-painted 20-inch wheels and have adaptive LED headlights. The side mirrors gain reverse tilt down functionality, and power-operated liftgate opens by swinging your foot under the rear bumper. The interior gains premium leather seating surfaces with heating and ventilation in the front, a heated steering wheel, a faux-suede headliner, three-zone automatic climate control, maple wood trim details, and metallic trim pieces in the cargo area. The 16-speaker premium audio system and full suite of driver-assist and active safety features are added.
