Reviewed by Automotive on

The Isuzu I-290 is a midsize pick-up truck manufactured by Isuzu Motors, Japan. The I-290 belongs to the I-series lineup of pick-up trucks that were introduced in 2005 at the New York International Auto Show. The I-280 became the I-290 in 2007, and the company has continued with the same name in 2008. The line-up was introduced to fill in the gap that was formed after discontinuation of Isuzu Hombre, a pick-up truck manufactured by Isuzu Motors until 2000. The Isuzu I-290 shares platform with midsize pick-ups manufactured by General Motors.

What's New

The Isuzu I-290 has minor feature adjustments in 2008. Isuzu Motors has discontinued the I-290 LS model in 2008.

Based on a wheelbase of 126 inches, the Isuzu I-290 measures 207.1 inches long overall, 67.6 inches wide, stands 64.9 inches tall and weighs around 3468 pounds. The Isuzu I-290 is very similar to GM’s Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon in looks, Therefore, Isuzu has tweaked the exterior styling of the Isuzu I-290 a bit to differentiate it from other pick-up vans.

The exterior refinements of Isuzu I-290 include Isuzu badged wheels, chrome finish bumpers, and a chrome grille. The Isuzu I-290 also features cargo tie downs and is equipped with 15-inch painted alloy wheels and all-season tires. The spare tire mount is fitted under the body of Isuzu I-290.

The I-290 belongs to a class of vehicles where utility and functionality comes prior to upscale looks. The interior of Isuzu I-290 is roomy but Isuzu used low-quality materials for the interior that seems to be decision driven by cutting cost approach. The Isuzu I-290 is equipped with a fair list of comfort and convenience features. Air-conditioning, passenger vanity mirrors, cargo area light, front area reading lights, cruise control, and power steering are some of the notable features available standard in the Isuzu I-290 pick-up truck.

Customers who desire more comfort features can opt for the Preferred Equipment package that adds rear tinted windows, rear jump seats, CD/MP3 stereo, and cloth upholstery. The interior of I-290 features front and rear cup holders as well as front and rear door pockets that are ideal to stash items during travelling. The cabin of I-290 is designed to offer good headroom and legroom to the driver and passenger. The truck offers 39.6 inches headroom, 53.3 inches hip room, 42.2 inches legroom and 57.1 inches shoulder room that appear quite standard for a pick-up vehicle.

Performance & Handling

Powered with a 2.9-liter inline-four engine mated with five-speed manual transmission, the engine cranks 185 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque that is adequate for on-road and off-road driving. Although the inline-four cylinder engine offers modest power, the Isuzu I-290 ride quality is good. The five-speed manual transmission standard in Isuzu I-290 is one of the best gearboxes for pick-up trucks. The maximum towing capacity of Isuzu I-290 is 3200 pounds while maximum payload is approximately 1532 pounds.

The 2008 Isuzu I-290 is equipped with a good list of safety features that include four-wheel anti-lock braking system, two front headrests, tire pressure monitoring, dusk sensing headlamps, daytime running lights, and ventilated front disc / rear drum brakes. It also comprises passenger airbag occupant sensing deactivation, engine immobilizer, front center lap belt, front integrated headrests, and electronic brake force distribution.
