Isuzu I-370

The i-370 was one of the last pickup trucks made by the Isuzu company in the U.S. as part of the i-series. Isuzu made the i-370 in collaboration with GM, which provided some of the mechanics and design for the model. In fact, the i-370 looks very similar to the GM Canyon and the Chevrolet Colorado.

However, Isuzu could not compete in the U.S. pickup market even with the help of GM. Isuzu left the U.S. in 2008.

About the Isuzu i-370

One of the defining characteristics of the i-380 is its resemblance to the Chevrolet Colorado and the GM Canyon. The designers of the i-380 jazzed up the front grille with a thick horizontal bar crossed with two vertical bars. Other than that, the styling is almost the same.

The i-380 was initially introduced with a 3.7-liter engine that produced 242 horsepower and 242 lb-ft of torque. The 2008 i-380 had an I-5 engine, giving it a bit more heft. Fuel economy on the truck wasn’t great; the vehicle could get 15/22 mpg city/highway.

The i-370 was available in a rear and four-wheel drive version controlled by a four-speed automatic transmission. The front suspension was constructed of a long- and short-arm suspension unit, and the rear wheels were on an independent suspension, giving the vehicle smooth control both on and off the road. The four-wheel version had a solid live axle rear suspension for extra stability.

The i-370 was available in two cab sizes: an extended cab and a crew cab. The extended cab was able to sit two extra passengers in the back, behind the front seats. The seats were split-folding and had decent room, although children were definitely better suited for that space. The crew cab was a four-door version of the i-380. This made the rear seats more easily accessible to passengers, although the added doors afforded very little extra room.

The interior was rather sparse in the i-370, especially in comparison to other vehicles on the market at the time. Even calling the i-380 a “working” vehicle did little to reduce disappointment passengers experienced while sitting in the cabin. Bucket seats did add a little extra comfort, although adjustments were limited to some lumbar support. The i-370 did have a leather-wrapped steering wheel, front reading lights and passenger vanity mirror. The vehicle offered an AM/FM radio and a single CD player with MP3 playback as standard, and six speakers were installed. Speed-sensitive volume control is a nice addition, however.

The i-370 did have a lot to offer in terms of safety. A four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS) was standard on all models. Front driver and passenger airbags were installed, as well as curtains, ensuring some level of safety during a crash. The passenger side airbag could be deactivated if there wasn’t a passenger sitting in the seat or baby seat in place.

The i-370 had fog lights, daytime running lights, automatic on/off for the lamps, and dusk-sensing headlamps. Inside the vehicle, front- and rear-integrated headrests and three-point seatbelts were offered. The ventilated front disc brakes and rear-drum brakes were supported by an electronic brake distribution system as well, making the i-380 a pretty safe vehicle to drive.

Isuzu i-370 Evolution

The Isuzu i-370 was the last hurrah for the i-series models. Isuzu pulled out of the U.S. market in 2008 due to financial troubles. The Isuzu i-370 was available in 2007 and 2008. Minimal changes were made between the two models.

A used i-370 can tend to be on the expensive side for a used truck, mainly due to the rarity of these vehicles. Not many were sold during the run.

The i-370 was a working vehicle. Don’t buy this vehicle used unless you’re willing to sacrifice some luxuries. The interior of the vehicle is somewhat disappointing, offering little in comparison to the competition at the time. The interior can feel quite cramped, although the four-door extended cab does offer a little more space. The body build is almost a clone of the GM vehicles it’s modeled after, so if you like the design you may as well go with the better Chevy and GM builds. In addition, the i-370 doesn’t have a V-6 or V-8 option like its GM-built counterparts.

However, the i-370 is a decent drive, offering comfortable control both on and off the road. The suspension allows you to do some real work, although the five-foot cab can be somewhat limiting on big jobs. Overall, steer clear of the i-370 when purchasing a used pickup truck for work and play, unless you want to take a risk with a possible quality-impaired vehicle.
