1997 Isuzu Trooper Review

Perfect for all needs including off road.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 1997 Isuzu Trooper is a very flexible and versatile sport utility vehicle (SUV) that has options and performance, allowing it to perform quite well in almost all situations. It demonstrates good off-road and roadway performance. Depending on model selection, the Trooper can also make an excellent and comfortable suburban cruiser or utilitarian off-road vehicle. The wide model selection creates a varied offering; Low end models, like the Trooper S, offer little in the way of internal amenities. However, these low-end models offer the same performance as its more expensive counterparts. As a result, the lower-priced options are good off-road that and lack much in the way of comfort. However, the upper-end models like the Trooper Limited offer many of the features that are standard in luxury vehicles. These more expensive but still perform very well and the extra cost provides a more comfortable experience.

The 1997 Isuzu Trooper is made with the wide model range and array of optional features, which means there's a Trooper to fit any driver’s needs. Although it's a good example of this industry stalwart, later models generally can be outclassed for a relatively modest increase in price.

The Range

Body Styles: SUV

What's New

The 1997 Isuzu Trooper gets four-wheel anti-lock brakes as standard equipment for all models.

The 1997 Isuzu Trooper is a fairly large SUV, measuring in at 183.5 inches long with a wheel base of 108.7 inches. This four-door vehicle gets a power antenna and skid plates as standard, while options include alloy wheels and a roof rack.

The 1997 Isuzu Trooper has a huge model range in terms of interior accessories. Lower end models are very minimalistic, while upper end models are almost luxury vehicles. For example, the only standard features in the Trooper S are an AM/FM radio and cassette player. However, the Trooper Limited comes standard with power leather seats, power heated mirrors, keyless entry, power windows, power locks, leather trim, a moonroof, air-conditioning, a cassette player, a CD player, and privacy glass.

Performance & Handling

The 1997 Isuzu Trooper is almost equally adept at driving on roadways as it is off road. It has decent acceleration for a vehicle its size and can turn reasonably well. But its versatility does come at a slight price; It's not quite as effective off road as some of the more dedicated performance-oriented SUVs, nor is it quite effective on roadways as many passenger vehicles. However, the Trooper’s versatility means drivers should be just as comfortable in both types of driving, which few vehicles are specialized in.

The 1997 Isuzu Trooper gets standard features on all models including dual-front airbags and four-wheel anti-lock brakes. Traction control is available on all Trooper models as well. Similar to the Acura SLX, the rollover issues for the Isuzu Trooper are occasionally exaggerated; unlike most SUVs, it doesn't rollover easily.
