2001 Isuzu Vehicross Review

Not the toughest or the strongest of the SUVs, but a reliable truck with a unique style.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2001 Isuzu VehiCROSS classifies as a sport utility vehicle that goes heavy on style and earned a lot of attention in Japan in the 1990s. It first appeared as a concept vehicle in 1993 in Tokyo, and it saw a limited release in Japan starting in 1997 and another limited release in the U.S. beginning in 1999. The interest in SUVs throughout the U.S. makes the VehiCROSS a natural in the U.S. market.

The VehiCROSS has a noticeably stylish exterior. It doesn’t look like any other SUV on the road. If you want to turn heads as you power down the highway, the VehiCROSS makes a great choice. Although it’s not the strongest SUV on the market, the VehiCROSS doesn’t lack power.

The VehiCROSS comes in one basic trim level, but you can add the ?Ironman? option, which includes a special hood insert, decals under the C-Pillar and on the tailgate, and the Ironman Triathlon logo on the front seats.

What's New

The 2001 Isuzu VehiCROSS remains a relatively new vehicle for the U.S. market, having only arrived in 2000. However, for 2001, the Isuzu VehiCROSS adds rear child seat tether anchors.

The exterior of the VehiCROSS sets it apart from all other SUVs. It features an extra-large windshield, a roof-end spoiler, skid plates, underbody moldings, composite bumpers, and integrated headlamps. Its styling looks truly unmistakable among SUVs. The 18-inch alloy wheels and modified steel-belted radial tires work great on tough terrain. The 2001 Isuzu VehiCROSS comes in Victory White, Ebony Black, and Astral Silver Metallic. Drivers find all of the expected convenience features in this SUV as well, including heated power mirrors, remote power door locks, a glare-reducing panel set into the hood, and tinted glass.

The 2001 Isuzu VehiCROSS has some unique and fun aspects to its interior as well. This SUV seats four in sporty red and black leather-trimmed seats, and it features a leather steering wheel, front reading lights, and cruise control. Sportiness and style definitely mark a priority for the VehiCROSS.

Performance & Handling

Some of the performance and handling features of this SUV include a rear four-link coil suspension with an extruded aluminum shock absorber and an added expansion chamber along with the Torque-On-Demand four-wheel-drive system and four-wheel ABS.

The 2001 Isuzu VehiCROSS’s four-speed automatic transmission with power and winter modes works off of a 215-horsepower, 3.5-liter, direct-injection, DOHC V-6, and it can hold a 697-pound payload when adequately equipped. Models also come equipped with speed-proportional power steering.

In addition to the four-wheel ABS, safety features on the 2001 Isuzu VehiCROSS include an anti-theft alarm system, front and rear headrests, electronic brake force distribution, front and rear ventilated disc brakes, and child seat anchors.
