2002 Jaguar XJ-Series Review

A true Jaguar.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2002 XJ-Series features the gleaming grille, quad-headlamp face, and beveled hood that make it unmistakably Jaguar. There are two styles available, and the Super V8 and Vanden Plas models are the extended-wheelbase versions.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 4.0-liter V-8
Transmissions: five-speed automatic
Models: Jaguar XJ XJ8, Jaguar XJ Sport, Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas, Jaguar XJ Super V8, Jaguar XJ XJR, Jaguar XJ XJ100

What's New

The 2002 Jaguar XJ Sport trim level debuts, melding essentials from the XJR and XJ8. Previously, the Vanden Plas Supercharged trim was only available when specially ordered, but it's regularly available now and known as the Super V8. The Jaguar XJ8L is no longer in production.

Exterior

The 2002 Jaguar XJ8 base and XJR have a 113-inch wheelbase that makes the vehicle 197.8 inches in length, while the Super V8 and Vanden Plas measure about 4.9 inches longer. The body styling of each has four round headlights and a vertical-bar grille that are signatures of Jaguar vehicles. Alloy wheels and 16-inch tires come standard on all models. The long list of standard features includes a power sunroof, a rear defogger, rear fog lamps, and intermittent wipers.

Interior

The 2002 Jaguar XJ-Series models have an elegant interior style with burl walnut wood and a high-grade leather trim, and most convenience and comfort features are included. The wheelbase is extra-long, but the rear seat benefits from the extra length. The sedan has enormous space in the rear seats for adults and wide rear doors for easy exiting and entering. In the base model, the XJ8 has rain-sensing wipers, memory system for the driver’s seat, power front seats, a six-disc CD changer, automatic climate control, keyless remote entry, immobilizer system, and air-conditioning. The interior also boasts leather and wood trimmed dash, center console, doors, steering wheel, and shift knob. The upper-level Super V8 and Vanden Plas sedans have premium Connolly leather upholstery, burl walnut wood with inlaid Peruvian boxwood, and lamb’s wool floormats.

Performance & Handling

The 2002 Jaguar XJ-Series cars are fitted with a four-liter V-8 that pumps 290 horsepower through an automatic five-speed transmission. The XJ8 and Vanden Plas levels get that version, while the Super V8 and the sporty XJR have a supercharged version that makes 370 horses. Driving one is a very memorable experience with the power and refinement contained within. Handling is superb in the luxury sedan segment, maneuvering in urban areas with style, while the engine noise is minimal, and the small sound will be that of a small purr. The ride is above the rivals, as well. Suspension absorbs every road imperfection quite well. Not only is it a lovely car to drive, it operates smoothly and eloquently in proper British fashion.

Safety

The 2002 Jaguar XJ-Series includes such safety features as auto delay headlamps, front fog lights, driving lights, emergency braking assist, anti-theft remote alarm system, child seat anchors, front seatbelt pretensioners, and an engine immobilizer. Other safety additions are child safety door locks, stability control, traction control, and electronic brake force distribution. There are also rear and front ventilated disc brakes, four-wheel ABS, and dual side-mounted front airbags for superior safety.
