2008 Jaguar XJ-Series Review

Built around luxury with few drawbacks.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The automaker Jaguar prefers to emphasize features such as a luxuriously spacious cabin, a sleek-looking hunkered-down body, and non-conventional arrangement of interior gears in the XJ-Series. The new body style seen in the 2008 version of the Jaguar XJ series first debuted in the 2004 models. Jaguar offers this car in two different yet similar model types. All five submodels of both model types have the same powerful and refined 4.2-liter, 32-valve, V-8 engine.

The Range

Body styles: four-door sedan
Engines: 4.2-liter V-8
Transmissions: six-speed automatic with manual shift capability
Models: Jaguar XJ, Jaguar XJ L, Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas, Jaguar XJ Super V8, Jaguar XJR

What's New

Both the exterior and the interior of the 2008 Jaguar XJ-Series have been updated in order to liken models to the Jaguar XK Sport Coupe. Exterior updates include changes to the tires, a new grille, new side mirrors, new bumpers, an added rear spoiler, updated model script, and the addition of front fender vents. On the inside, legroom has been increased, an HD radio is now available and seats now have an electronic heating capability.

Exterior

The exterior does feature updates, but models of the 2008 Jaguar XJ-Series also maintain the classic all-aluminum and lightweight Jaguar body. The first update is standard 19- or 20-inch tires on certain models. The next update is to the grille, which now features a Jaguar in an attack pose, rather than the traditional leaping jaguar. But, the traditional hood ornament is still available as an option. This grille change likens the models to those of the Jaguar XK-Series. Another borrowed exterior feature is side fender vents. The updated side mirrors are ere equipped with signal indicators. New bumpers, a rear spoiler, revised model script, and front fender vents are also updates.

Exterior features of the XJ and XJ L are 18-inch wheels and a moonroof. The XJ L has a longer wheelbase. The Vanden Plas has the same extended wheelbase and 19-inch tires. It also has power-folding mirrors and an electric rear sunblind. The XJR model has a shorter wheelbase with 20-inch high-performance tires. The Super V8 has the 20-inch wheels and all the other exterior and interior features of the XJR but on a longer wheelbase.

Interior

The interior of all models of the Jaguar XJ-Series still features a spacious cabin worthy of other ultra-luxury models. It contains many high-tech gadgets that are unconventional in their arrangement. Interior updates to the 2008 Jaguar XJ-Series include increased legroom, an HD radio, and seats with heating capability. The redesigned front seatbacks offer more room, so that those sitting behind the front passengers have more room to stretch out. One downside is that the ventilation controls remain confusing.

Interior features of the XJ and XJ L are full power accessories, 16-way heated seats with three-stage heat and memory settings, power adjustable pedals, and Bluetooth connectivity. The plush trim in these two models is all leather and burl. Many of the exterior and interior features that are standard on the higher trim levels are also available as options on these two models. The next highest trim level, the Vanden Plas, has additional interior features including fold-down picnic trays for rear seat passengers, a premium Alpine audio system, foot well rugs made of lamb's wool, and a heated steering wheel. The XJR model has all these options and added safety features.

Performance & Handling

The two most basic sedans come with the option of a navigation system, whereas it's standard in both of the other sedans and the XJR, the All models of the XJ-Series will shift automatically, but the driver can choose to shift manually. But the shift control often sticks and is hard to move.

Safety

All the models of both types come with both stability control and traction control standard. The XJ, XJ L, and above have computer-based adaptive suspension and rear park assist. The Vanden Plas also comes with front park assist. Added safety features of the XJR are upgraded brakes and adaptive cruise control.

EPA Fuel Economy

Jaguar XJ, Jaguar XJ L, Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas: 16/25 mpg city/highway
Jaguar Super V-8, Jaguar XJR: 15/22 mpg city/highway
