2013 Jaguar XJ-Series Review

The 2013 Jaguar XJ is Jaguar’s top-of-the-line sedan. It is a competitor in the full-size luxury class, along with cars such as the BMW 7-Series. This sedan is offered in a standard wheelbase models – the XJ models – and a long wheelbase – the XJL models.

New For 2013

There are a lot of upgrades for the 2013 model year, as can be expected from the flagship sedan of a company that produces high-quality luxury and sport cars. New features include:

  • Supercharged V-6 base engine
  • Four-wheel-drive models
  • Eight-speed automatic transmission
  • Navigation upgrades
  • Entertainment system upgrades


The 2013 Jaguar XJ has an aluminum body and comes standard with clear coat monotone paint. Metallic monotone paint is available as an option on the base, Portfolio, and Supercharged models. The grille trim is chrome and the wheels are silver aluminum. Standard exterior features include a window grid antenna, light tinted windows, power heated mirrors, first-row sliding and tilting glass sunroof, and second-row fixed glass sunroof with power sunshade. A lip spoiler is available as an option for the Supercharged, Supersport, and Ultimate models.

Interior & Cargo

The 2013 Jaguar XJ comes with a plethora of comfort features. The seats are leather-upholstered, and are eight-way powered in the base. All other models have 12-way power seats. Driver and passenger lumbar support is standard, as is heated cushion and seatbacks. All models except the base come with cooled front seats. Dual-zone front automatic air-conditioning is standard and comes with an air filter. Air-conditioning circulates throughout the cabin with under-seat ducts. All models except the base model come with separate controls in the rear.

Convenience features include a navigation system with voice activation, a driver information center, and a trip computer. The navigation system now features Dynamic Zoom and Visual Lane Guidance. Other standard features include a compass, front and rear cup holders, three 12V DC outlets, and power and one-touch down front and rear windows.

Entertainment features include an audio system with AM/FM/HD/Satellite radio with seek scan, a CD player, MP3 capability, DVD audio compatibility, and auxiliary audio input. Steering wheel controls and voice recognition come standard. Fourteen Meridian brand speakers are the standard for the base model and Portfolio, while all other models have twenty brand speakers. Two first-row LCD screens are standard on all models. The Supersport and XJL Supersport come with two second-row LCD screens, while the XJL Ultimate comes with four second-row LCD screens. The second-row LCD screens are optional for the base model, Portfolio, and Supercharged models. An entertainment system with DVD and digital media is standard for the Supersport and Ultimate models, and optional for the other models.

Storage features for the XJ include full floor console, mini overhead console, and a lighted glove box. Cargo tie-downs are standard. The Jaguar XJ comes with 15.2 cubic feet of luggage volume.


Frontal airbags, side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, and anti-lock brakes come standard on the Jaguar XJ. An occupant-sensor comes standard with the airbags. Other safety features include driveline traction control, height-adjustable safety belts with seatbelt pre-tensioners, rear child safety door locks, and parking assist. The standard blind spot sensor utilizes radar technology and comes with a rear camera. This sedan also warns the driver when the fuel level or tire pressure become low or when it is time for the vehicle to be serviced. This sedan comes equipped with fog lights and variable intermittent rain-sensing windshield wipers.

The security system for this sedan includes a keyless entry system, panic alarm, and ignition disable. It is also content-theft deterrent.

Driving Experience

The 2013 Jaguar XJ base comes with a 340-horsepower (hp), 3.0-liter, V-6 engine, with a fuel economy of 18/28 mpg city/highway. The Portfolio comes with a 385-hp, 5.0-liter, V-8 engine, with a fuel economy of 16/24 mpg city/highway. The Supercharged model has a 470-hp, 5.0-liter, V-8 engine, with a fuel economy of 15/23 mpg city/highway. Finally, the XJL Supercharged, Supersport, XJL Supersport, and XJL Ultimate come with a 510-hp, 5.0-liter, V-8 engine, with a fuel economy of 15/23 mpg city/highway. All engines come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and auto-manual.

The XJ is a rear-wheel-drive vehicle and comes equipped with an independent suspension in the front and the rear. The suspension is adaptive and has automatic level control in the rear. The front and rear shocks are brand-name. The front springs are coil springs, while the rear springs are air springs. An electronic stability system and Tiptronic automatic come standard on all models. Locking/limited slip differential is a standard feature on all models except for the base model and Portfolio. Cruise control comes standard, with adaptive cruise control available as an option for all models save the XJL Ultimate.
