2001 Jaguar XJ8 Review

A luxurious and powerful sedan that may spend more time in the shop than competing models.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2001 Jaguar XJ8 has been used for different luxury sedans in the Jaguar lineup from 1968 to the present. These are the flagship luxury models and are mostly full size four-door sedan body styles with a few coupe models interspersed, and all have a front-engine and rear-drive layout. Series 1, 2, and 3 were built from 1968 through 1973. These had a long hood with a flat front angling inward slightly featuring from the beginning Jaguar’s unique grille and headlight setup. These had a 2.8- or 4.2-liter six-cylinder engine, then after 1972 a large 5.3-liter V-12. The models from 1979 through 1992 were referred to as the Series-3 models and along with some minor exterior modifications, including a vertically split grill and the Jaguar hood ornament, these received slight power upgrades and a range of new luxury features. From 1986 to 2008, several modified versions were introduced including XJ40, X300, X308, X350, X358, Vanden Plas models, and more. The current generation includes models from 2009. These have a bulkier and more aerodynamic body style with a new grille, intakes, and headlights. Engines include a 5.0-liter V-8 and a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 along with a V-6 diesel model. The XJ-Series is known for luxury and refined performance as Jaguar’s flagship sedan. 2001 models have a similar reputation. Earlier models were not highly rated in the dependability category, and this includes 2001 but a new warranty may have made this less of a concern for that model year.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 4.0-liter V-8
Transmissions: five-speed automatic
Models: Jaguar XJ8, Jaguar XJ8 L, Jaguar XJ8 Vanden Plas, Jaguar XJ8 Vanden Plas Supercharged

What's New

The 2001 Jaguar XJ8 remains virtually the same, but several features were added including a reverse parking control that senses when objects are near and warns the driver. For 2001, Jaguar added a four-year or 50,000-mile warranty that includes scheduled maintenance.

Exterior

The 2001 Jaguar XJ keeps the same basic box-type sedan body with Jaguar’s signature grille and the recognizable round front headlights. It has a long profile with 198 inches in all and sits relatively low on large alloy wheels. Some exterior features include standard heated and power mirrors, dual exhaust, power moonroof, fully automatic headlights, fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, and rear defroster and rear window blind.

Interior

The 2001 Jaguar XJ8 seats five people comfortably with two front bucket seats and a rear three person bench. Leather upholstery and different wood trim options are standard on all models. The trunk has 13 cubic feet of cargo space. Some interior features include standard air and automatic temperature control, standard memory front seats, power windows and locks with remote keyless entry standard, standard telescoping and tilt steering, standard auto-dimming rearview mirror, an integrated cell phone is available, navigation is standard on the Vanden Plas supercharged model and optional on other models, an eight-speaker sound system is standard on the base and L models while an upgraded nine-speaker is optional and the upgraded nine-speaker system is standard on both Vanden Plas models, and CD player and cassette player are standard with either audio system.

Performance & Handling

The 2001 Jaguar XJ, XJ8 L, and the Vanden Plas have a 290-hp 4.0-liter V-8 that produces 290 lb-ft of torque. This engine is powerful and gets up to speed fast but shifts smoothly with the five-speed automatic transmission. The Vanden Plas supercharged has a 370-hp 4.0-liter V-8 engine, which produces 387 lb-ft of torque for a sport-like jump and faster acceleration. This, too, is coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission. All models handle well and have speed-sensitive steering that makes the driver feel like they are in control at higher speeds, even given the long dimensions. Four-wheel independent suspension is standard and offers a smooth ride in most driving conditions. The Vanden Plas supercharged gets touring and adaptive suspension as well, improving the ride further.

Safety

The 2001 Jaguar XJ comes with a range of standard safety features including the required front-impact airbags, dual front side-impact airbags, ABS brakes, traction control, and a security system.
