2000 Jaguar XK-Series Review

A beautiful and very fast cat.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2000 Jaguar XK-Series consists of the KK8 and the XKR. The XK8 is packed with some monstrous horsepower and a hefty tag price. The XKR gets some of its genes from the XK8 but has an even more powerful secret under its hood. Both cars are good reasons to spend some lottery winnings.

The Range

Body Styles: coupe, convertible
Engines: 4.0-liter V-8 engine
Transmissions: five-speed manual transmission
Models: Jaguar XK8, Jaguar XKR

What's New

There are no major changes for the 2000 Jaguar XK-Series. Fans of the brand can now get behind the XK8 and a newly rolled out model, the XKR. The XK8 gets revised anti-lock braking system now tagged as the Electronic Stability Braking System. The brake rotors on the front disc also have been enlarged. The audio system and some safety elements also were improved.

Exterior

The 2000 Jaguar XK8 started by fascinating sports car lovers back in 1997 with its riveting shape and very responsive V-8 that can give out 290 horses. The XK8 serves as the foundation for the XKR, which ups the ante by equipping it with a more potent supercharged V-8. The XKR is built to be quite a stealthy speed monster. This explains the minor changes on the exterior to distinguish it from its sibling. It can be distinguished from the XK8 with its wire mesh and the louvers on the crests of the fenders. The louvers actually serve as an extractor that draws air in an increased rate through its radiator pack. There also is a spoiler that crests on top of the edge of the trunk. Other details include XKR lettering on the doorsills and trunk lid and Jaguar badge with red backgrounds. The XK silhouette retains its beautiful shape, making use of subtle curvature and leonine lines. The curves and humps of this car simply spell sexy.

Interior

The 2000 Jaguar XK-Series boasts of rich leather, wool carpeting, and wood treatment for the dashboard. Consumers are in a Jaguar and the space is pretty cramped but the cabin of the XKR can accommodate six footers without a problem. The convertible top may be a bit lower than how it should be while the seats are not the best you can get for an expensive car. The seats actually may be considered as the weakest link of the XK-Series package. The side support one will need during fast and aggressive driving is not there. There are rear seats, but it can only be good for some luggage or grocery bags. Even kids will not be comfortable in the rear seats.

Performance & Handling

The engine of the 2000 Jaguar XKR is the naturally aspirated, AJ V-8 that's made in-house can give out 290 horses. Add the supercharger into the equation, and it can easily crank out 370 horsepower. This power plant is quite similar to the supercharged unit used for the XJR sedan with some modifications so it can fit it the sloping hood of the XKR. The supercharged engine was built to provide excellent throttle response with capabilities of tapping its torque in the lower rev range. The supercharged V-8 is linked with a five-speed automatic transmission built by Mercedes. The XKR definitely has good looks and stunning speed. It can go from a standstill to 60 mph in a matter of 5.2 seconds. The convertible is slower by a blink because of its heavier architecture. It can charge to a top speed of 155 miles limited electronically.

The 2000 Jaguar XK-Series offers a suspension system that works wonders. The front end makes use of shocks and control arms while the rear uses driveshafts with coils and control arms. It also has Computer Active Technology Suspension that monitors and changes the settings depending on the driving conditions. The ride quality is very appealing with the combo of responsive handling and stability on the road. Speed cannot be questioned, but it is perfect for long-haul rides on twisty country roads. The power steering gives good feedback and responds sharply. The driving dynamics of the coupe and the convertible only has some minor differences. The coupe is rocklike in terms of solidity and stability. The convertible shudders a bit when going over road imperfections. The soft top somehow does well in managing the wind noise.

Safety

The 2000 Jaguar XK-Series comes with Electronic Stability Braking system, a host of airbags, and tether anchors of a child seat.
