2008 Jeep Compass Review

A compact sport utility vehicle that drives very much like a car.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2008 Jeep Compass is a pretty straightforward automobile. It is a sport utility vehicle designed to transport larger loads of people or cargo, but it is still compact and carlike. The only two models available for 2008 are the Jeep Compass Sport and the Jeep Compass Limited. Both models house the same 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine and offer 172 horsepower with 165 lb-ft of torque. There are two options for the transmission; a five-speed manual is standard with a continuously variable transmission is optional. Both rugged models have four-wheel ""freedom"" drive, perfect for wintery weather. Front-wheel drive is also an available option on both models. The 2008 Jeep Compass Sport comes with more expensive options. This package comes with a two-liter four-cylinder engine that offers 158 horsepower with 141 lb-ft of torque. It comes with continuously variable transmission, front-wheel drive, and better fuel economy.

What's New

Very few changes have been made to the 2008 models of the Jeep Compass. All models now feature standard air-conditioning and chrome accents. Small tweaks to the engine also promise a smoother ride and quieter performance. This led Jeep to introduce a lifetime powertrain warranty. The last change is that a navigation system, which formerly was only an option for the Sport model, is now an option on the Limited model as well.

The exterior of the 2008 Jeep Compass has no updates. The exterior feature of a seven-slot grille is classic Jeep. But other exterior and interior styling sets the Jeep Compass apart from other Jeep models. Both the Sport and the Limited have power windows and mirrors available as optional exterior features. Keyless entry is also available as an option. The Sport model has 17-inch alloy wheels. The Limited model has 18-inch wheels. But in certain cases all-terrain wheels, chrome tires, and a sunroof are available as exterior options.

Despite a couple of interior updates, many features of the 2008 Jeep Compass remain classically Jeep. One such tried-and-true interior feature is round headlamps to illuminate the interior. Updates to the interior of the 2008 Jeep Compass are standard air-conditioning and chrome accents. Other standard interior features are a CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary jack and a cargo space in the floor. The interior is made to seat only five passengers, so it is a small sport utility vehicle. This can be a drawback, as many people picture SUVs as spacious. When one moves up to the Limited model, added features include a privacy screen, leather upholstery, an automatically dimming rearview mirror, heated front seats, reclining rear seats, a satellite radio, and an outlet that offers 115 volts of power. Interior options that may be available include Bluetooth connectivity and stain-repellent fabrics.

Performance & Handling

New revisions to the engine and transmission ensure that the ride is smoother. These revisions also enable the engine to perform more quietly. Because Jeep is confident that these revisions will make the engine withstand the test of time, a limited lifetime powertrain warranty is now available. One of the benefits of this compact sport utility vehicle is that it handles just like a car. Jeeps give the impression of being rough and tumble, but the Compass is not intended for off roading or trailblazing.

Safety is good on both models of the 2008 Jeep Compass. Stability control, traction control, and cruise control make both models safe and sound, as do full-length side-curtain airbags and a rollover sensor. Although front-seat side airbags are optional, the 2008 Jeep Compass scored perfectly in side-impact crash testing. It lost one point in frontal-impact testing.
