2012 Kia Sorento Review

A versatile and reasonably priced crossover

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview
The Kia Sorento has been Kia's best-selling vehicle since it arrived in January 2010. This popular crossover was refreshed for the 2011 model year, so very minor changes have been made for 2012. The Sorento's 2011 redesign brought the SUV a sportier look that featured sharp lines and an angled window line. The Sorento did receive a few changes for 2012, and at the top of the list is a new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 191 horsepower. Thanks to its direct-injection technology, the Sorento now has not only more power, but better fuel economy. In fact both of these are best-in-class. A new option is Kia's new UVO powered by Microsoft hands-free infotainment and communications system. The interior of the Sorento is quite spacious, as it has an available third row of seating. Also inside the Sorento are features like satellite radio and Bluetooth with steering wheel-mounted voice activation controls. The 2012 Sorento was already the best-selling Kia, and with its new-improved look, it appears it might continue to resonate with buyers.

The biggest change comes under the hood with a new 2.4-liter four-cylinder GDI engine that produces 191 horsepower. Other changes include power folding mirrors, memory seat/power passenger seat, ventilated driver's seat, and a heated and wood trim steering wheel.

Exterior

The Sorento was refreshed in 2011.The exterior features intricate lines as well as an angled window line. The headlights are large and flared back, accompanied in the front by fog lights. Topping off this crossover are 17-inch alloy wheels.

Interior

The Interior of the Sorento is spacious and comfortable for five, not so much in the optional third row of seats. Inside you can also find Sirius Satellite Radio and Bluetooth with steering wheel-mounted voice activation controls. EX models offer voice-activated navigation, as well as back up sensors and a rearview camera.

Performance & Handling

The Sorento gets increased output from its 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that now produces 191 horsepower compared to the 175 horsepower in 2011. If looking for even more power, Kia offers a 3.5-liter V-6 that is sure to do the trick with its 276 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Safety

The Sorento comes with numerous standard safety features, including a plethora of airbags. These include driver and passenger front airbags, first and second row side curtain airbags, and front seat-mounted side airbags. Other safety features include standard ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution, Hill Start Assist Control, and Downhill Brake Control.
