Kia Spectra5

The Kia Spectra5 is part of the Kia Spectra line, also called the Kia Cerato, which was first released in South Korea in 2003. The Spectra name was used in the United States instead of Cerato. The Spectra5 designation was for the hatchback version of the vehicle. The Spectra5 and the Cerato was a short-lived vehicle, lasting from 2003 to 2008.

The Kia Spectra5, despite not selling very well, was a decent vehicle. The hatchback Spectra5 was surprisingly sporty and attractive.

As the name would suggest, the Spectra5 has five doors. Four to five passengers can sit comfortably in this compact vehicle. The first run of the Kia Spectra5 weighed in at 2,860 pounds, a light vehicle that could speed along even with a somewhat insignificant 2.0-liter engine that produced 138 hp. Regardless, it could go from zero to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds, which is fairly impressive considering this car in known as a cheap model. But even so, the engine does not perform consistently on the highway, as it struggled during high-speed maneuvers.

The Spectra5 was only available in the SX trim, unlike the sedan that offered a base LX, middle class EX, and the top-of-the-line SX. The SX came with full-power accessories, keyless entry, upgraded interior and exterior trim, better and bigger wheels and tires, as well as a sport suspension that improved handling.

Inside the Spectra5, you find a somewhat roomy, driver-friendly cabin. Although much of the cabin is comfy and well-equipped, several complaints were made about the quality of the driver’s seat, which seemed to lack proper cushioning and did not adjust to the driver’s body. Legroom was also an issue for tall drivers due to the short seat tracks. However, the back seats were the most comfortable, as it had cushy sitting area and plenty of room, which made it the most pleasant area to ride in.

The cabin amenities include a leather-trimmed steering wheel, power windows and locks, and a 12-volt charger for phones and other electronic equipment. Storage space is also quite generous with 18.3 cubic feet available with 60/40 split rear seats that allow for a larger storage area.

The car is wider than other competitors in its class, which makes for extra room for passengers. This wide stance also provides better handling during turns. The SX sport suspension also makes turning and handling a breeze, although the engine does somewhat struggle in fast turns. Even with the tall tires and considering the overall height, the car will still handle pretty well.

On the outside, the Kia Spectra5 is a fairly attractive vehicle. It also provides a great deal of protection to the driver. Full curtain airbags are offered as well as front and seat-mounted side airbags. The hatch has crumple zone that prevent passengers from being crushed during an accident. One major safety disadvantage of the Kia Spectra5, however, is the lack of standard anti-lock brakes. That didn’t change the federal crash tests since it gave the Spectra5 five out of five stars for front impact crashes. It also awarded it four out of five stars for rear passenger protection and during side impacts.

Fuel efficiency on the Spectra5 is decent, but not great in comparison to other cars of the same size, getting 24/32 mpg city/highway.

Reliability of the Kia Spectra5 is decent, but not altogether impressive. The car is covered by one of the best warranties in the business. You may even find a used vehicle today that is still covered under the 10-year 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

The original retail value of the SX Spectra5 was only $17,000. But fortunately for Kia Spectra5 buyers, they’re more likely to find a deal because of the terrible resell value of the vehicle.

Kia Spectra5 Evolution

Due to the short production run, there were little changes in Kia Spectra5 between model years. The same 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine came standard on all vehicles across the line.

Minor trim changes were made available year-to-year but no drastic changes were ever made to the vehicle during its limited run. In the last year of production in 2008, changes between the previous year were limited to active front headrests being made standard trim.

If you are looking for a cheap and reliable vehicle without the flash, the Kia Specra5 might be the right car. Cheap, used models are available for resell. Even the used models may have the 10-year powertrain warranty that’s still in effect.

No announcement of a 2012 model was announced. Production of the Kia Spectra5 ended in 2008. The Kia Forte followed it in 2008.
