2005 Land Rover Range Rover Review
A classy SUV with improved performance.
Reviewed by Automotive on
The Land Rover Range Rover is a sport utility vehicle (SUV) designed by BMW. The Range Rover features the expected comfort of a BMW, but also offers the off-road capability of a quality SUV. Considered a luxury SUV, the Land Rover Range Rover comes with a higher price tag than average SUVs, but previous owners who enjoy both luxury features and off-road experiences argue that it is well worth the money. The interior is roomy, even in the back seat, and the on-road ride is comfortable and smooth. However, even with the BMW-type design, some owners were unsatisfied with the interior, claiming that it is has poor ergonomics and the interior material quality is not on par with the price of the vehicle.
Engines: 4.4-liter V-8
Transmissions: five-speed automatic
Models: Land Rover Range Rover
The 2005 Land Rover Range Rover has newly-designed electronic systems, including updated audio systems, telecommunications systems, and navigation systems. All three of the electronic systems are integrated with fiber optics. The new navigation system is DVD-based and uses a Video Graphics Array (VGA) display, which has better resolution and is brighter than the previous LCD monitor. A 4x4 interface displays the angle of the front wheels, suspension settings, and the vehicle’s direction of travel. The new audio system has more speakers and is boosted to 710 watts to provide enough power for all of them. Bluetooth is available for use with compatible cell phones.
The alloy wheels are 19 inches and a full-size, inside mounted, all-season, spare tire is included with new purchases. The front and rear windows are equipped with rain-sensing intermittent wipers and a rear defogger to ensure that both the front and rear views are clear. Privacy glass is used so the interior features a more private feel. The power glass sunroof is capable of remote operation and keeps the interior air fresh by ensuring that air circulates on hot days. Cargo tie-downs allow for extra cargo to be carried on the exterior. A trailer hitch is also included to haul up to 7,700 lbs. of cargo that will not fit in the interior cargo space or on the cargo tie-downs. The exterior rearview mirrors are heated power mirrors that have reverse tilt to allow for curb view when the vehicle is in reverse, and both the front and rear of the vehicle have parking sensors installed.
The front seats have plenty of room for the driver and front passenger to be comfortable. The driver’s seat is 12-way power adjustable, and the front passenger seat is 10-way power adjustable. Both front seats have power-adjustable lumbar support to alleviate back discomfort. The front seats are leather-upholstered bucket seats. Rear seats are also covered in leather and have split-folding seat backs that recline. The rear seats provide less shoulder, leg, and head room, but are still spacious enough to seat three passengers comfortably. The rear ventilations ducts have fan control to ensure that air flow is sufficient in the rear. Three 12-volt outlets are available: one in the front, one in the rear, and one in the cargo area. The audio and cruise controls are on the tilt and telescopic steering wheel. There is wood trim on the dash, doors, and center console to add extra style. The three-zone climate control includes interior air filtration. The shift knob and steering wheel are trimmed with leather and the shift knob also has alloy trim. The audio system has 15 speakers that are powered by 710 watts and can play CDs and MP3s. There is also a subwoofer installed in the audio system and multi-CD changer located in the glove compartment.
Performance & Handling
The 4.4-liter, V-8 engine produces 282 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. The four-wheel drive is permanent and the five-speed automatic transmission allows manual shifting for better off-road handling. The transfer case has two speeds and can be set to low and high. The Land Rover Range Rover can tow almost 4 tons efficiently. Performance is more than satisfying with the refined drivetrain, as the steering and handling give the driver more confidence than comparable SUVs. The ride is not perfect, but is considerably smoother than some of the competition.
Both the front and rear cabin areas have head airbags. There are also dual side-mounted airbags installed in the front. The four-wheel Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS) use ventilated front discs and solid rear discs. The high-intensity headlamps guarantee improved visibility and are dusk-sensing. Electronic brake force distribution, stability control, and traction control all help the Range Rover keep a tight grip on the roadway.
