2022 Lexus ES MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Excellent hybrid fuel economy
  • Spacious, high-quality interior
  • Proven Lexus value and reliability

Cons

  • Personality not on the list of updates
  • AWD powertrain is slow

The 2022 Lexus ES receives several updates to keep it a best-seller in the luxury midsize sedan segment. In addition to subtle design changes, including new headlights and a new grille pattern, the ES boasts improved tech and updates to the F Sport lineup. That said, many things haven't changed. Expect similar powertrains and the same laid-back demeanor as the ES that's been on sale since 2019.

What's New

The Lexus ES is being updated for 2022. Key changes include:

  • A restyled front end with a new grille pattern and new headlights
  • Touchscreen compatibility for the infotainment interface
  • More standard driver assist and active safety features
  • Updated braking system is expected to improve brake pedal feel on gas models
  • Dynamic Handling Package added to ES350 F Sport
  • New ES300h F Sport is available

What We Think

If you seek comfort and relaxation over all else, the Lexus ES is a solid bet. The longstanding sedan has an easygoing attitude that asks little of its driver. Other cars in the luxury midsize sedan class are more quiet and smooth, but the ES' spacious and well-appointed cabin makes it a nice place to pass miles.

That said, if you seek something fun to drive or with other soul-stirring attributes, choose a different car. With any powertrain, the ES' performance isn't close to sporty. That's why we prefer the hybrid model over any other in the ES range. It best matches the car's feel and purpose, even though it's not quick— so why not choose the hybrid and save at the gas pump?

The 2022 update should help remedy one of our main ES gripes: its clumsy touchpad-controlled infotainment system. The 2022 ES gains a new touchscreen setup with improved ease of use. That'll further increase the luxury sedan's low-stress experience, as will its likely appealing value proposition and demonstrated long-term reliability.

Performance and Fuel Economy

Once again the ES should offer a few powertrain choices. As in the 2021 ES350, the standard engine will likely be a 3.5-liter V-6 with an eight-speed automatic transmission powering the front wheels. Acceleration to 60 mph should take about 6.0 seconds (we've tested a F Sport at 5.9 seconds), and fuel economy should come in at approximately 22/32 mpg city/highway.

In 2021, all-wheel drive became available for the first time with the ES250 model. That should continue in 2022 with the same 2.5-liter I-4 engine and eight-speed automatic. In MotorTrend testing, 60 mph arrives in 8.2 seconds, and fuel economy should come to about 25/34 mpg.

Our preference of the range will probably once again be the hybrid powertrain, which seems to best suit the ES' chill demeanor. It should combine a 2.5-liter I-4 with an electric motor and CVT automatic. Acceleration from 0-60 mph takes 7.8 seconds, and fuel economy should rise to about 43/44 mpg.

Safety

Based on the Lexus ES' previous crash test performance, the 2022 model should be very safe. In 2021 the ES earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick + award and a NHTSA five-star overall rating, the highest designations from each of those bodies. Expect a host of standard active safety and driver assist tech like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and front automatic emergency braking. For 2022, Lexus adds new capabilities including an intersection turning assist feature and a function that can automatically reduce speed through curves. The lane recognition technology has also been improved in an effort to better recognize lane edges.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

Given that the 2022 ES is based on the 2021 model, its spacious interior should carry over. That means about 37 inches of headroom and 40 inches of legroom in both rows. Trunk capacity in all models, including the hybrid, will likely continue at 13.9 cubic feet.

Technology

Lexus seems to be catching on that its touchpad-controlled infotainment system isn't the best. The automaker is transitioning to more user-friendly touchscreen setups across its range, and the 2022 ES is no exception. Both the standard 8.0-inch screen and upgraded 12.3-inch screen now feature touch capability. Higher-end ES models could have a head-up display and 360 degree-view parking camera system. As on many Lexus models, a Mark Levinson premium sound system will be offered as an upgrade.
