Lexus GS350

With the introduction of the Lexus GS350 midsize sedan for 2007, Lexus managed to hit the sweet spot between an entry-level luxury sedan and a premium sports car. A replacement for the GS300, the four-door GS350 debuted with a larger 303-horsepower V-6 engine and a slew of standard high-end amenities.

The GS350’s sloping fastback silhouette and low to the ground profile were carried over from the third-generation GS300, which received a dramatic redesign just a year before its replacement. The most noticeable change in the new GS350 is a more powerful 3.5-liter V-6 engine, a near-60 horsepower increase over the previous GS model.

A direct fuel-injection system coupled with the GS350’s bigger drivetrain helps the car reach zero to 60 mph acceleration in a reported 5.7 seconds, while a multilink suspension provides the athletic handling of a true sport sedan. Models are available in rear drive or all-wheel drive.

Major standard features on the five-passenger Lexus GS350 include wood and chrome interior trim, leather upholstery, a power sunroof, heating driver seat, alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, and a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel with audio and cruise controls. Optional upgrades include ventilated seats, a 14-speaker 330-watt Mark Levinson sound system, a navigation system with backup assist camera, parking assistance, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and run-flat tires.

A prototype of a new trim level, the 2013 Lexus GS350 F Sport, was introduced in 2012.

About the Lexus GS350

Like its predecessor, the Lexus GS350 strikes a compromise between luxury and sport. However, the newer GS sedan closely lives up to its designation as a refined sport sedan thanks to a 3.5-liter double overhead cam V-6 that offers up even more horsepower than the GS350’s V-8 equipped sibling, the Lexus GS430.

The luxurious side of the GS350 is apparent in its long list of comfort and convenience features, which include a multi-level heating driver seat, 10-way adjustable seats with memory settings, leather upholstery, real wood and leather trim, a power glass sunroof, and a 10-speaker premium audio system. With room for five passengers and ample cargo space, the GS350 can transition from a luxury commute vehicle during the week to a posh family car on weekends.

Lexus GS350 Features

The 2012 Lexus GS350 comes in one well-appointed trim, which is available in either rear or all-wheel drive. Under the hood, a 3.5-liter 303-horsepower V-6 engine powers the vehicle with a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode.

All exterior and interior features were carried over from the previous 2011 GS350. Production of the 2012 GS350 was limited to a short run as Lexus prepared to release a drastically-redesigned 2013 GS350 model in early 2012.

Standard features on the 2012 GS350 include a power sunroof, power trunk closer, 17-inch alloy wheels, leather seats, real wood trim, heated driver seat, 10-way adjustable seats with memory settings, automatic xenon headlights, foglights, keyless ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 10-speaker audio system with six-CD changer. Standard safety equipment includes stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, side curtain airbags, knee airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, and a Safety Connect emergency telematics service with automatic collision notification.

Upgrading to the Luxury Value Addition package adds a touchscreen navigation system with real-time weather and traffic, voice command system, a backup assist camera, a Bluetooth downloadable phonebook, and a premium 14-speaker 330-watt Mark Levinson surround sound audio system. An F-Sport package upgrades to a premium exhaust system with upgraded brakes and suspension.

Individually available options include 18-inch wheels, summer tires, an adaptive suspension, adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated and ventilated front seats, a steering wheel trimmed in wood and leather, and a power rear sunshade.

The GS350 offers an average amount of space for a midsize luxury sedan, with front seat passengers receiving 37.8 inches of head room and 43.5 inches of leg room and rear passengers getting 37 inches of head room and 36.4 inches of leg room. Cargo capacity is 15.2 cubic feet.

Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 19/27 mpg city/highway for rear-wheel drive versions.

Lexus GS350 Evolution

The first Lexus GS350 to hit the market for the 2007 model year was similar in appearance to the GS300 it replaced. The most significant difference between the two models was the new GS sedan’s larger 3.5-liter V-6 engine.

In 2008, Lexus gave the GS350 a mild facelift with a revised grille, restyled front end, new side mirrors with integrated turn signals, remodeled gauges, and an aluminum-trimmed center stack. No changes were made to the GS350 in 2009.

Another minor restyling in 2010 updated the GS350 with more leather and wood trim and a number of new technology features, including iPod/USB connectivity, a Safety Connect emergency telematics system, satellite radio availability, and streaming Bluetooth audio. The navigation system option was updated with voice recognition software and real-time traffic and weather information. Few notable changes occurred in 2011.

There isn’t much that’s new for 2011 -- on all three models, if the car isn’t equipped with optional navigation, the rearview mirror includes a compass (navigation system has its own compass). Otherwise, last year’s improvements carry over: there are new wheel options, an updated grille, a voice command feature for the nav system, Bluetooth connectivity, and options from the F-Sport line including wheels, brakes, intake, and suspension modifications.
